Shims

I have a EJ 89L and it does fine, but to get a real close shave I need to go ATG with pressure and really after I rinse the cream off. Many quick passes are needed, 'blade buffing', never knew I was doing that but read it here.

Was wondering if I could use a slant razor or to shim the one I have? I get good shaves as it is but do have to bear down a bit. No real bad irritation but the constant scraping action does do a little of that.

Upside of the razor as it is now, I am confident that I will not nick myself. Not as much as a cartridge but pretty calm as I shave. Might lose that.

Hi there.
I had the Muhle R89 (same head as the EJ89) and found it very mild.
So much so that I couldn't get a decent shave with it and decided I needed something slightly more aggressive.
ATG doesnt suit me so I go WTG and XTG to get a close enough shave.
Bearing down on the razor is never a good idea and will definitely result in burn etc.
The idea is to do multiple passes in different directions with only enough pressure to keep the razor head on the skin.
I now use the Merkur 34C HD which I find more aggressive that the R89 and have been experimenting with shims.
I found one shim to be just right and provide that slight increase in blade exposure, but with two shims I can feel the blade on the skin too much and that results in burn.
So yes, give one or two shims a try and see what works for you.
You will be surprised how much difference a thin shim can make.
It can be a cheap way to find the level of aggressiveness that suits you.
