I know the purpose of shimming a razor to increase blade gap but has anyone ever

Assuming you are using a trimmed DE blade as a shim, DE blade thickness varies slightly between manufacturers. Typical thickness is .1 mm (.004 inch).

It depends on what material you use to make your shim. I have commonly seen them made from razor blades which are 0.1mm, but also from plastic such as old credit cards etc. which tend to be thicker. I use a vintage French shim made by Petard on my mildest razors and it is 0.7mm in thickness.
