Shedding Shavemac

I bought a new Shavemac Silvertip brush back in May and have used to maybe 20 times. It has shed one bristle every few shaves and I wasn't concerned. I used it today and 5 or 6 bristles came out. Now I'm concerned.

Your thoughts?

I wouldn't panic (yet). Soak it in warm water for 5 to 10 minutes then comb it out. Let it dry thoroughly for a couple of days before you use it again. It will likely settle-down in a couple of shaves.

My new D01 Silvertip Shavemac shed ~15 bristle in the first 3 shaves. Now all shedding has stopped, and I'm optimistic that it won't lose any more. Given that a knot has thousands of hairs, a few here and there won't make a difference. The Shavemac brushes are packed very densely anyway.

I'm not sure at what point you should start to panic, but I would be worried if it continued to lose hairs every shave. If it does continue to shed, then could email Bernd at Shavemac, I think there is a 3 year guarantee on brushes.

My D01 is fairly new, and it sheds now and again, but there are THOUSANDS of bristles, a great warranty, and exceptional customer service, so I'm going to give it some leeway to reach a point of equilibrium. I'm confident that it will settle out soon.

I don't worry about shedding until it's an every shave, more than five hairs per shave type of problem. When you get brushes that are packed the way most of them are getting today you will have hairs shedding.

If you've got a knot with 800 hairs in it, shedding 50 hairs isn't going to be noticed much. I've never counted how many hairs are in a quality knot, but it's a lot.

From the Shavemac site:

Shavemac guarantee

With the purchase of a shavemac product you are buying a quality product with a suitably longer guarantee. We are always there for you when a fault or defect occurs.

Shaving brush

Generally speaking shaving brushes may be protested for up to 3 years. However, the brush may not exhibit any signs of incorrect handling. That means that brushes that were poorly taken care of and poorly cleaned are not subject to this guarantee.

I couldn't remember, but a few years ago when I ordered my shavemac , Berndt already was well known for standing behind his work...I don't remember my shavemac ever loosing a single hair , and the brush is fantastic in every respect..

I had two brushes (not Shavemac) with densely packed knots and both would shed. The first, shed roughly 66 hairs in thee shaves and the second was worse.

I was told that densely packed knots isn't uncommon. Here's what steps I was asked to accomplish - by two separate manufacturers.

1. Give the brush an aggressive shampoo with your normal hair shampoo (do this for seven (7) days).
2. Thoroughly rinse the brush out and let it dry after each shampooing.
3. When it is completely dry, comb it thoroughly with whatever wide gap comb or brush you have available.
4. Then, rub your hand back and forth across the brush to bring up any additional loose hairs.
5. After seven days of shampooing, use the brush exclusively for another week to see if the shedding continues.

At that point, you will have done everything possible to determine if you have a "true shedder." If the shedding does not stop shedding, at the end of this 14 day routine, you have a defective brush.

With my two shedders. . . .the first brush stopped shedding and hasn't lost a single hair since. The second brush continued to shed, excessively, and I sent it back for a replacement.

Good information, and a reasonable approach!
