Sheaffer school pens

I got a bargain on what I believe to be a couple of sheaffer school pens. They each came with an empty cartridge, but I'd really like to put a converter on them if possible. Anyone have any ideas on if the regular sheaffer converter will work, or if the mini converter might fit? The best answer I've been able to get so far is maybe. Both pens are identical except for color. The nibs are marked sheaffer F made in usa. The cartridges are 2" long and 5/16" OD.

Is my best bet to either get some syringes, and refill the cartridges, or make a cartridge/sac hybrid converter? Or will one of the other converters work? Also, will the cartridge loosen up after being removed from the pen a few times forcing me to use fresh cartridges occasionally?

I have three Sheaffers. All use the cartridge you show. Two have the old style converters so I believe you could use a converter in those pens. Don't know what you paid for the pens, but the converters I've see on Flea Bay went for about $12+/-. I don't know about the newer twist type converter.

I'd just refill the carts, the converters cost more than what the pens usually go for ... or do the eyedropper conversion. I have bought those school pens solely to harvest the feeds, they are actually quite nice, ebonite feeds that can be adapted to Indian pens with cheap and ineffective ink control.

So if I eyedropper them, should I use an o-ring and grease, or just use some silicone grease only? That might be my best option. I would like a converter, but I ended up with both pens for half of what a converter would cost. I will probably try to refill the cartridges with a syringe, too, but don't have those yet. Soon....

Id refill the carts myself, but i like to change inks often and dont like wasting a who pen bodies worth of ink

I have one of these (hooded nib) and two No-Nonsense. All use the same filling system. A little silicone grease on the threads is all I needed to ED them. I have no leaking or burping issues.

Is there a link for how to do this? The Airmail pens I have only come with fine nibs. I like the pens but wouldn't mind swapping out the nibs.

I just refill the carts with a syringe. The only thing to watch out for is after many removals and reinsertions, the hole in the cartridge may start to enlarge and could eventually lead to a loose fit and potential leakage. That hasn't happened to me yet, but I do check the cart each time I refill to make sure it's still tight. I've got several empty cartridges in reserve, so if one ever starts acting up, I'll just toss it. The other option is to change the pen to an eye dropper filler. Haven't tried that yet, but the threads look tight and substantial, so a simple dab of silicone grease should be all that's needed.

how do you check ? does the cart drip ink if held upside down? the fit itself does not look like i can tell if its loose or tight in the pen.
I am on my first and only catridge, lamy safari and i have some syringes that i am using to refill.

You can see if the hole is starting to open up and, if it's really loose, it will slide on easily without much friction. It's a judgement call.

Convertor? Why? Aren't Sheaffer ink cartridges still available?

I actually have at least one old Sheaffer school pen myself and now you've motivated me to put it back in use!

:biggrin1:

Didn't know they were called school pens. Remember when they were sold in a blister pack with one or maybe two cartridges. Have several. The "F" is for fine point nib. That's European, so it's thicker than a Japanese fine point nib.

Unless you're just wanting to put a converter in it or make it an eyedropper pen, Sheaffer still makes cartridges for them. It seems to be a wet ink with the fine point and is, well, just fountain pen ink, but it fits.

I'd vote for doing that 'hack' that someone here posted a while back about converting a cartridge with an ink sac (I've made 3 or 4 of those since I found that thread) or eyedropper (I just get some silicone grease from the local hardware store). I love those Sheaffer school pens(the translucent bodied pens are fun for eyedroppers as well).
