Sheaffer Jade, Potentialy my favorite

Its late and I have nothing to do so I figured I would review my Sheaffer jade. I find that although there are a lot of discussions on forums there are far less reviews than I would like to see, so here it goes.

I am quite new to fountain pens, but like similar hobbies I went quite crazy buying up a bunch of distraught, broken, and forgotten examples to restore. I used a few to practice and then took my skills to the better pens. I have a solid collection of about 10 pens now all vintage with the exception of a new Cross cartridge pen that I bought to see how I felt about fountain pens at the start. On any note some of my nicer pens include a Parker Duofold Jr., Esterbrook dollar pen, Sheaffer No Nonsense, and a few others. The highlight of the collection has quickly become my Sheaffer Jade. It is by far the largest pen in the collection but since I have big hands it fits me quite well. The weight is great, the look is great and the feel is extremely natural. Keep in mind that all of my nice pens here are used, some more than others but all used none the less. It may be that the Jade has the least worn nib but it writes like a dream. It clearly has the thickest nib which may simply aid my writing style but I find it takes almost no pressure to write with and tracks extremely smooth.I would be glad to suggest this pen to any one with bigger hands or someone who wears a lot of green haha. As of tomorrow this will be my everyday pen so I will post again when I have spent some real time with it. Considering I only paid $7 for the pen, and another $2 for a new sac Im not that bad off. If you find one in the wild, I highly advise the purchase you may just be surprised.

Dave

Wow...nicely done and for just $9? Wow! Don't forget to post up pics for us to see your new toy. :) I love my Sheaffer, best writer I have ever tried.

Cheers,

So its been a bit over a week of daily use and really getting to know this Jade. As expected I still love it. The pen writes so nicely and feels great in my hand. The only and I mean only issue is the faded ink stained barrel. However since the whole pen more or less suffers from it it has become a kind of brown jade with the exception of the top of the cap. Considering the less than $7 I paid for this pen and the maybe $3 I spent restring it I cant complain. Unfortunately I dont write much at work as a software engineer but when I do its always a pleasure.

Great pen you found there, or should I say "stole"? Just an FYI, most pen aficionados would not call the pen a jade but instead a flat-top. Jade green is the color. The plastic used was called Radite by Sheaffer and is most often found discolored as yours is, which appears to be from the 1920's.

Nemo, as alway I learn something new here every day. As for the price of the pen I was able to negotiate it way down due to some serious tarnish on the nib and a hardened sac which prevented the lever from moving. The pen was in pretty bad shape when I got it but cleaned up fast and quite nicely if I say so my self. I really enjoy its size as well as the stiffness of the nib, I will keep an eye out for more in my travels. Unfortunately this one is faded quite a bit I would love to get my hands on a non faded one some day.

Mine's not jade, but an oversize black and pearl flat top (although the pearl has a fair amount of discoloration...apparently due to outgassing of sulfur compounds from the rubber sacs that affects the "Radite" (celluloid) barrel). It's a great pen...the nib is huge and it writes like a dream. Typical of Sheaffers, the nib is pretty stiff with no noticeable flex. If you're going to be using yours everyday, be careful to not post the cap. These Sheaffers have a reputation for developing cracks in the cap if you jam it onto the barrel.

Very nice looking flat top there, even with the fading it still looks great as the barrel appears to have faded evenly. I like my jade flat top so much im going to start looking for more flat tops in the wild.

Just scored a flat top in marble on the bay for next to nothing just like Snargle's the clip is a bit bent but otherwise its all there. Looks like a new AD has begun for me... Ill post pics as soon as it arrives.

Way to go, Dave! The clip can probably be straightened out pretty easily...and you already know how to replace the sac, so you should be good. Looking forward to seeing the new baby!

I was looking at that one (good thing I didn't start bidding against you!) Looks nice...hope it turns out well for you.

Im expecting at least a re-sac (although I may get lucky) and some polishing. Im not sure what to do about the clip. In the pics it looks like it was bent out, then someone pushed it back in and kinked it in the middle there a bit. I may leave it as is for now and get everything else in line. Wont know until I get it in front of me though.

Here are a couple of my jade flat tops. Both are "flat ball hump clips".

One which belonged to Opal Lanterman, acquired in Kansas. Typical barrel discoloration, called "cooked spinach" by pen collectors.

Google searches show gas and oil fields in her name located in Barton County -- Why I love inscriptions and their personal histories.
