Shea Moisture Shave (From Wal-Mart)

I was in my local Walmart just a little bit ago and found a peculiar sight. While picking up some Sensor Cartridges I noticed some shave cream in a JAR!!!! Yes a JAR!!!! It was also boxed in a relatively cool looking box.

It's called Shea Moisture SHAVE and it contains Shea Butter and African Black Soap. It was only 7.94 so I picked one up to try. It recommends lathering with a brush and gives mention to head shavers as well (people are actually paying attention to us =)). I plan on giving it a try in a few minutes. Look for a review soon.

I haven't tried it, but people here have given it pretty (read: really) unfavorable reviews. Not trying to burst your bubble, just giving you a heads up in case it doesn't work out great for you. Good luck, I hope you can get a good shave from it!

Yep...just wish I would have checked here ahead of time. I just never expected to see this and it was kind of an impulse try.

In a word: Disappointing. In a short sentence: Leaves a lot to be desired.

First of all, it doesn't lather at all, and the brush just basically liquified it into a watery mess. It's better with fingers but takes an awful lot to get anywhere. That being said, it wasn't a bad shave, especially on my head, and it left my skin really soft, but it smelled something awful in the process.

Bottom line, AVOID!

it smells worse then afrosheen and hair grease. i opened a can and its what detered me from buying it and the way it looks. this is nasty but it saves you money. if im in ulta beauty where they have sample bottles before i will by cream or soap i put some in the palm of my hand and spit in it and begin to lather it up. if it will not react at all i will not react at all to the product and it will stay on the shelf.

I think its cheaper at target by a couple of dollars.

I got this to lather up (bowl) with a brush lot of product after some time ( in the past i applied with hands). I didn't mind the smell and I thought generic Witch Hazel smells way less appealing. It was actually a pretty good shave result with passes feeling with a decent compromise of slick and cushion.

For me, my skin feels really nice after the shave and as it has too many potentially beneficial ingredients to just flat out not recommend to someone who may be trying for something other than scent profile.

I have tried quite a bit of more inexpensive level soaps/cremes to compare in the last couple of weeks, so i don't have the luxe depth, but I have tried KMF Lavendar/Shea, Cremo, C.O. Bigelow, VDH-deluxe, modified VDH-deluxe, Nivea Shave cream I got in Russia (comes in a tube), Shick Hydro gel, Hydro hot lather Gillette Foamy Sensitive and superlathers made from acombo of these. I do have one little sample of EJ Sea Buckthorne I haven't used yet, but the Shea Moisture held its own in my opinion.

You should have picked up a Shea Moisture brush if it was there. It's got pretty good reviews as an entry level brush here.

always read the reviews before buying any unknown product. chances are, if it's any good, someone here has already discovered it, and it has been discussed..

I got some on clearance for $2.50. I haven't used it yet, but $2.50 is a good price for a nice reusable jar even if I hate the shave butter.

I made the same mistake...only I tested it before actually using it. The test didn't go well, so it sits in my shower as a pre-shave treatment/wash.

Ditto on the no brush at Wal-Mart. They must only be at Target.

Also, I specifically bought it even though I hated the scent in the store. I thought it might help with ingrowns since I have recently been using my Mach III (heading back to Sensor soon enough, DE wasn't working at the present time).

It's slightly irritating that it says not to expect gobs of foam (obviously because there is no soap) but when they recommend use of a brush, do you not automatically think that there must be some level of lathering value?

:lol::lol::lol::lol:
I thought so too...luckily I experimented with it first instead of just trying to use it. I think it will just become a light face cleanser for most and maybe something to defunk brushes or something to use in superlathers, but I don't know that this stuff will actually add anything to a lather. Either way, if you were to actually shave with this stuff, you'd need a lot to build a protective layer up on your face and at that price, I don't think it's worth it.

Let me preface this that I am not defending this shave butter because I love it, it really aint that great.

There is definitely soap in this cream. Not only is it prominently listed on the face of the box, it is the first Key Ingredient listed:

Organic Shea Butter Shave Cream
Shea Butter & African Black Soap Shave Butter
Shave Cream

Shave & Soothe

What is it: Pure African Black Soap, unrefined organic African Shea Butter, healing oils of Coconut, Black Seed, Juniper and Willow Bark Extract create this age old shaving preparation for fighting ingrown hairs and razor bumps with a vengeance.

How to Use: It can be lathered up with a Shaving Brush (recommended) or with fingers. Remember this Shave Butter is chock full of vegetable butters, botanical extracts and vitamins, NOT harsh soaps and synthetics so don't expect a lot of foam but expect a rich lather and luxuriously close shave.

Key Ingredients: African Black Soap, Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Black Seed Oil, Willow Bark Extract, Juniper Oil, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Essential Oil Blend

Size: 6oz

I'll say this much for it, by comparison it makes Willams seem to lather easily and smell great!

But seriously, I'm sure it's great for your skin, just not so great as a stand-alone shaving cream. I'll probably use it up gradually by mixing small amounts of it into lather built from something else.

I think that is great idea. I may try this, however I noticed that when i tried to add some EO& EVOO to a vdh puck, either my lathering was just crappy at that time or the oil affected the lather (as someone suggested). I am thinking it was a combination of both.

I used this with VDH dlx last nite. I charged the brush with vdh and then dabbed a small amount of the butter (put tip of finger into butter and dabbed into breech) and bowl lathered. The lather was way richer than I expected the butter smell was still apparent, but the lather was like a VDH dlx lather, i expected the combo not to act like a superlather, and i wasn't disappointed. It felt heavier and looked more wet. If i was writing the ad copy, i would definitely use the term "emollient" as that it was it looked like.

I definitely got a DFS shave with this lather with a 3 pass 1 WTG, 2 V. and skin felt great.

I didn't get much lather at all with a brush on it's own. I added it to Omega soap, and it gives a great shave. I like the smell of it and it's moisturizing properties, super skin conditioning. To me it's more like a face cream than a shaving cream.
