As I was reviewing my shaving-related expenses during my first year in this hobby, I began to wonder where I fall among the masses.

So here goes, how much did you spend on shaving related products in your first year (brushes, soaps/creams/balms, blades, razors, etc.)?

On a side note, I still laugh every time I think back to the "This is going to save me money" thread.

I was given a Gillette razor, my first mug of OS soap and a boar brush by my dad when I started shaving. I bought a replacement round near the end of the first year if I remember correctly so my total expenditure was most likely under $2.00.

Regards,

Doug

I try not to think about this question and I NEVER discuss with SWMBO! I "started" for under $10 with a $5 Gillette from an antique store, $2 pack of blades, $1 puck of Williams I had on hand, and a VDH/Men-U brush and bowl set I was given years ago. I had some bay rum, Clubman, the Veg, etc. After the frugal start the ADs hit and I added... 7 vintage Gillettes, 2-3 mug/bowls, 4 brushes, 10+ creams, croaps, soaps, 200 blades, 2-3 balms, witch hazel, a RazoBrite razor bath. I'm not disclosing costs. :wink2:

Probably less than $30, certainly less than $40. I used the >$2.00 blades wherever I found them, a couple cheap vintage Gillettes, and a super cheap Lord, and Barbasol.

The money saving threads are indeed humorous. So is the amount I spent in the first year of wetshaving! A quick check looks to be about $1054.

I wouldn't have guessed that high, but what can I say? Straight razors are pricey :biggrin1:

. . and, I haven't treated the process as a hobby for a year. I'm not certain my level of expenditures amounts to the kind of thing an average B&B member would rank as a hobbyist's level. I still had a shave mug and mug soap, but hadn't used it in a very long time. I bought six shaving mugs, which I might not have, without B&B . .

I haven't voted yet. What's the consensus on it? Should I vote?

Well, I decided when reading this thread to start keeping a tally of how much I spent, so I added everything up since I began, which according to my e-bay records is a little over a month ago. Since then I have spent 211.80 (euro). That is including the 100 astra's and 6 sticks of Arko I have in the post.

As long as I can curb my impulsiveness i can see this being managable enough, :whistling::whistling::whistling: hey stop tittering, I mean it, I really can manage it ;)

I'm not 100% sure on the exact number but I voted 500-1000..which seems about right. I've probably made most of it back via BST though. That forum is a godsend for reversing late night AD binges. :001_tongu

When this poll closes, we should submit the data to one of the TV shrinks, Dr. Phil, or Drew Pinsky and have them address our madness on the air. I'll bet Gillette would sponsor.

The key to stopping ADs is to not visit BB. Today I received a Chubby 2 in 2-band. Two hundred friggin' spondoolicks!! I come across a thread about overpaying and if it is worth it, so I order TGN brush for about $60 to see if I've really overpaid. I get scientific at the strangest times.:cursing:

Around $500 and I'm right at a year in. That seems like a lot, but I have a decent collection of razors and enough blades, soap, cream, and aftershave to last for at least 4 years. I've also had a chance to try most of the products on my wish list. These days I don't bid or watch ebay as much, and haven't bought anything online in a while. I'm guessing year two will be a lot less spending and a lot more of trying to use up the stuff I have so I can justify buying more.:biggrin1:

To be fair - some of that money was an investment. My Mergress and Kent brush are not going to wear out by next year. The cream, on the other hand - oh, the cream . . .

I prefer not to sit down and tabulate all the individual expenses - Yikes :scared:. It's all good though . The first fiscal year is nowhere near complete either...

I keep trading and responding to WTB posts, so I am sufficiently confused at this point, but I'm pretty sure that I've broken even. :thumbdown At least I can justify new purchases with some variation of this story.
