Shaving soaps and the cost per shave- Data mined from the 3017 thread.

For my full size 3017's so far:

Soap/CreamCost Per Shave
DRH Arlington$0.27
RR Don Marco$0.35
Nancy Boy$0.33
QCS Vostok$0.35
SCS Pumpkin$0.41
Strop Shoppe Bay Rum$0.29

Yeah, I'm surprised how fast some of you guys go through product. I must load on the light side of things, probably cause I face lather and every little bit that gets lathered gets used.

Great job guys.

Adding my last finished soap here

Stirling Frozen Tundra - (puck+sample) - $8.00 - 68 shaves - $0.12/shave
Barbasol Original - 2.25fl oz - $0.97 - 13 shaves - $0.075/shave
RazoRock King Louis Lavender - 130g - $12 - 72 shaves - $0.166/shave

Note: I traded for the KL Lavender, so I used the last price from the internet archive of Italian Barber's product page.

I have numbers for two soaps based on samples.
Barrister and Mann - 14g, 15 shaves = 0.93g/shave
Stirling - 28.3g, 15 shaves = 1.89g/shave.

Based on that, B&M soaps, with the higher sticker price, costs within pennies of Stirling per shave since I will get half the shaves out of the same 4oz puck.

Never realized that in order for me to shave I must take out my old gram scale and calculator :) Kidding aside, this is really great information.

I'm sure many of the cost/shave data here is not done on a scale, just from full pucks. You would have to know how many shaves you had from a puck, so 3017ing it is probably recommended.

When it all comes down to it, does the cost per shave really matter? We spend $5 for a coffee easy, but worry about how many cents each shave takes? If it is an enjoyable shave, wouldn't you be more than happy to spend upwards of $2 per shave?

The point is, it highlights that "expensive" products aren't necessarily expensive if they last longer and cost per shave is the easiest way to represent that.

To a much lesser extent it lets me quantify cost versus performance. If products A and B perform very similarly for me, what basis would I have to justify $0.05 vs $0.50 per shave. When they're completely different formats (cream/croap/milled) and quantities I have very little to go on other than "this one smells better."

You're missing the point of the thread.

We are on a shave forum after all....comparing and debating is what we so.

And no, I wouldn't want to spend $2 a shave if I knew I could get similar performance and scent from a different product for 20cents a shave.

It might not matter, but it's interesting. Especially for those of us who love spreadsheets.

Bingo.

When it all comes down to it, does the cost per shave really matter? ...

It's a good reference source when a new shaver complains about the high cost a soap, while touting the great value of a softer soap which initially costs less... only in the short run. A fine example is the price of a Tabac refill puck, 125grams @~$15.00 vs. a 60 gram puck of Haslinger @~$9.00, I'm not picking on Haslinger, which is a fine soap... and 52% smaller than Tabac.

50g of RR ABCBA just finished. 28 shaves, 1 lost lather (dropped brush in sink) and a few grams in the bowl, so 1.787g per shave.

We'll say $20/300g, so $0.0667 cents per gram. Which makes it about $0.12 per shave.

Not bad at all for the top tier performance I get from it.

Dont we compare MPG in a car ? If MdC is 4 times the price of a average puck but it gets 10X the usage it does show that the cost of the puck equates to the cost per shave. Then with that information you can decide if you want to spend more on a puck or not. For me its about the performance of the soap or creme, i look at the cost after that, and never look at the cost per shave. That just me, but the information is interesting and useful for most.
