Shaving Snob?

So here's the story. I recently got myself setup with what I consider for myself a nice starting shaving kit.

Razor: Lord L6 with a Merkur handle, don't know the handle model - $22.00
Blade sample pack - $5.00
Pre shave: Proroso - $5.00
Soap: Arko Stick - $3.00
Brush: Antiga Barbiera Boar Brush - $27.00 maybe a little expensive for a first brush but I really liked the look of it.
Styptic and Alum Block - $8.00
After Shave Balm - The Real Shaving Co. - $3.00

Total = 73.00 Bucks!

So I got a nice shave this morning, went out with some friends for lunch. And I got a few compliments on my shave as my face for once was smooth. And I mean feel and look, no red irritation and no really visible nicks. So I was asked if I shaved with a single blade razor, and told them how I started DE wet shaving. All of a sudden my one friends friend comes out of no where talking about that's snob talk. And how his barbasol and Gillette Fusion, put all that crap to shame.

Now this dude always has red marks on his face that look like they are from rough shaves, and I have never seen him with a clean looking shave. Now I know maybe spending 73 bucks for shaving might not seem feasible for everyone. But I am still new the DE shaving and coming from carts myself I know that they can range from $55-60 bucks for a set of 12 carts. I think I made a great investment in not only saving my skin from super razor burn, and the many ingrown hairs. But I enjoy it, its actually relaxing for me to have a shaving routine and it only takes me 15 min. 5 over when I used carts.

I apologize for what may seem like a rant, but I am just a little confused here. Does wanting to take care of my skin by finding the best possible way for ME to shave make me a snob?

Nice post. People will always be defencive about personal habits. I think that's what is going on. Maybe your friend will look into wetshaving after seeing that it works for you.

Sort of like most things, the more you experience and observe the more likely you are to encounter the outliers. At least I hope your friend's friend is an outlier. If that turns out to be the norm, get other friends. Otherwise shrug it off.

I'm not calling Dr Chris Moss a "shaving snob" but this is his self proclaimed Wall of Shame.... THIS Sir would make most of your friends and families heads SPIN............

It was a cry for help. PIF him a $5 tube of C.O. Bigelow on the sly.

You'll change his life for the better.

No, not at all. It makes you an intelligent gentleman who cares about his appearance and skin care. +1 for you. Forgive your friend because he doesn't know any better.

My close friend kind of chided me when I told him how I shaved. He suggested that I use a powered fusion. After several conversations he is on the list for a Mergress, Gotcha!

Sounds like he's a bit insecure about his own choices.

That said, there's plenty of snobbery anywhere that you find people intensely interested in something, and this interest is no exception. Talking about it at length can come off snobbish, especially when you believe (and therefore express) that it is superior.

Yes, I am a shaving snob. I enjoy the process and sense of achievement I get afterwards. I enjoy learning about different products. I enjoy learning about the history of the various companies in the industry. I enjoy the discussions on these boards and I enjoy my occasional participation. In fact, the only thing I don't like is dealing with my family's complaints that I've overspent on things I could get cheaper from the local drug store.

Yes, I am a shaving snob. No apologies from me. It's my face, my responsibility. I am happy to help others when they ask, but if they are content with a third rate experience, I leave well alone.

He sounds like one of these people who has strong opinions about everything- including things he knows nothing about.

Consider the source and move on.

Not worth trying to convince anyone. I am a happy shaving snob. It's a blast. Good shaves are a side benefit. My 81 year old father thinks I'm nuts. He says he wouldn't go back to a DE razor for anything! He knows everything...
