shaving mug question

I was looking at several different mugs. My question is how are you suppose to lather soap in the mugs that are separated in two sides? Are they just for creams. What I mean is they have half the top of the mug separated. Hope someone understands what I mean.

Those are not really shaving mugs per se.
They are old fashioned scuttles where it was not common to have hot running water in a bathroom.
You would fill the mug with hot water, bring it to the bathroom, load the brush on your soap, and then put the loaded brush in the section of the mug above the hot water to keep it warm.

A modern shaving mug is basically just a bowl with a handle, in fact many folks like bowls better.

Just a short wide mouth mug or bowl works fine.
Those split scuttles are very nice collectors pieces, but I wouldn't try to use them with modern equipment to shave. IMO It's a lot of extra work and hassle for no real gain.
