Shaving in the shower

I have shaved in the shower since I was in my twenties, a good 25 years I think. Old habits die hard, but wetshaving in itself is a new habit. I'm trying to think of any benefits of not shaving in the shower, can you guys think of any?

For me, it's just a tad awkward shaving in the shower with a brush and soap/cream. Tough to get the lather mixture right; I like a big mirror (that isn't wet or foggy); it's nice to have a counter when putting the brush and razor down.

Sometimes I will shave in the shower, but it's always with a brushless product.

I shaved in the shower with a cartridge and canned cream for 15+ years. I just can't make it work quite right with a DE, brush, and soap. If someone has a trick I'd love to hear it. But as of right now I think I need the larger mirror while I'm perfecting my technique.

I have de'd in the shower..use a heavy razor and sharp blade..if you miss any spots..once you step out of the shower just touch up

I still shave in the shower from time to time. But to answer your question- here are a few benefits of not shaving in the shower

1.) Think of all the water you'll be saving, instead of wasting.
2.) Less likely that you'll accidentally leave your wet brush and more importantly, your wet razor in the shower. (Especially if you have kids.)
3.) You'll never have to worry about what happens if you drop your razor. "Heads up"! (Literally)
4.) Less likely to slip and fall (especially if your wife uses tons of conditioner like mine does.)
5.) The sink is smaller and easier to clean your stubble out of. Have a look at the bottom of your tub after you've turned the water off.
6.) Not having to spray down your mirror to remove the fog
7.) Never having to worry about burning yourself if someone flushes.
8.) It's easier to listen to music while shaving when the water isn't constantly flowing
9.) You don't have the worry of knocking over a scuttle off the ledge of your tub, OR your MWF dish.
10.) Your *** will not look like it's sunburned from standing in a stream of hot water. (That's my wife's comment to me all the time.)

But if all else fails, at least the steam from the shower is quite useful for a comfortable shave.

Brad

Old habits are hard to break. Between low flow shower heads and enjoying the hot water massage, I don't think shaving in the shower is a waste or immoral. Varying your shave routine might provide more enjoyment, but there is no need to exclusively use one method or the other.

Personally I find it more relaxing to shave at the sink, and I have larger choice of brushes, soaps, razors, etc. I occasionally shave in the shower but it is usually when I am traveling and have downsized the experience to a single nylon brush and shave cream in a tube and I am just trying to get the job done.

I have showershaved about 98% of my shaving life, and have not done it once since recently switching to a DE.

Benefits so far:

Quicker showers (and the obvious less water/heat used).
Shaving is more of a relaxing session now, rather than something to get through.
Accessories are easier to reach/put away.
I can tell what I'm doing. Before, I would keep feeling with my hand and scraping when I felt stubble.
I'm freer to shave any time of day, anywhere.
It's how Don Draper shaves.

I've even converted to cold water after years of hot. I feel refreshed and ready to go when done. The hot water felt great but it was more of a steam bath making me ready for bed than starting the day.

With all due respect, none of this is true. My rebuttals to each point are in blue:

I still shave in the shower from time to time. But to answer your question- here are a few benefits of not shaving in the shower

1.) Think of all the water you'll be saving, instead of wasting
You don't have to keep the water running while shaving. Fill a small plastic Tupperwear container with hot water and rinse your blade in that.
2.) Less likely that you'll accidentally leave your wet brush and more importantly, your wet razor in the shower. (Especially if you have kids.
The same could be said with it left on the sink. Keep an eye on your kids (or do like me and don't have them)
3.) You'll never have to worry about what happens if you drop your razor. "Heads up"! (Literally
I've been shaving for 23 years and have never dropped my razor. Who does that?
4.) Less likely to slip and fall (especially if your wife uses tons of conditioner like mine does.)
Rince the bottom of your tub with water before you get in.
5.) The sink is smaller and easier to clean your stubble out of. Have a look at the bottom of your tub after you've turned the water off.
I've never seen shaving stubble not be able to be easily washed down the drain with shower spray after shaving.
6.) Not having to spray down your mirror to remove the fog
I splash hot water once at the beginning of shaving and it stays that way. Water by the sink can fog up too in a hot bathroom.
7.) Never having to worry about burning yourself if someone flushes.
Again, turn the water off while you are shaving. Don't leave it running. You don't leave it running at the sink do you?
8.) It's easier to listen to music while shaving when the water isn't constantly flowing
Yet again, turn the water off while shaving. You can actually hear a more pronounced shaving sound in the echo of the shower.
9.) You don't have the worry of knocking over a scuttle off the ledge of your tub, OR your MWF dish.
Get a handy shower shelf (see photos below) Even before putting in this shelf recently I've never knocked anything off the ledge. Are you Jerry Lewis?
10.) Your *** will not look like it's sunburned from standing in a stream of hot water. (That's my wife's comment to me all the time.)
For the last time, turn OFF the water while shaving. You don't need to keep it running.

But if all else fails, at least the steam from the shower is quite useful for a comfortable shave.
This is the only true statement.

Brad

I've shaved in the shower for the past 13 years and had none of these issues. I've easily shaved DE for the past 3 months with continued success. The key to successful shaving is to turn the water off while you shave. Get yourself a plastic Tupperware container to hold hot water in and use that to rinse your blade off between strokes. Key advantages to shaving in the shower is the easy ability to keep your face wet during your shave and to be able to rinse off quickly between passes. It is also much cleaner as you don't have a sink to clean out and dry off after shaving. When I used to shave at the sink, water, cream, hair got everywhere. Now it all stays contained in my shower area/tub and can quickly be hosed down by the shower head in two seconds.

Below is my shower set up that I've use successfully for some time.

Here's the small Tupperware bowl I use to hold hot water:

If this mirror isn't large enough for you there are bigger ones you can buy. But then again, what's the need? It only need to be as big to hold your face. This one is plenty big:

I just had this light installed which has improved my vision:

Like I said, been shaving in the shower 12-13 years using a brush, cream, mirror, bowl and had no problems. Adding the light, shelf, and moving to a DE has improved the situation. Give it a try, you may find it makes life much easier and keeps your sink much cleaner!

it has to get cold standing there without the water running, no? assuming the shave is during/after the shower?

Nice setup!

Nice setup!

Not really, the warm steam still left over from the hot shower keeps things warm for the duration of the shave (Which is about 10 -15 mins now)

Thanks! As you can see I like to switch between different creams depending on my mood.

With all due respect, none of this is true.

The OP wasn't asking for what's true and what's false. His question was "I'm trying to think of any benefits of not shaving in the shower, can you guys think of any?". I simply listed a few. Whether some of the incidents happen or not shouldn't dismiss their validity.

Your points hi-lighted in blue did everything but answer his question.

In any case, those pictures of your set up are fantastic.

As jb pointed out, there are ways around most any negative. For my situation, I prefer to shave with cooler water that what I shower with. I also don't have a light above/near my bath tub. The only light in my bathroom is above my sink. I also like the large mirror above my sink where I shave. I have tried to shave with a smaller mirror, but I personally found it more difficult. I am sure with practice that would not be an issue, but why change something that works for you.

Thanks, jb, for showing us your setup in such detail.

It is possible to get very nice DE shaves in the shower with the right setup and due attention to water management.

With all due respect, but your opinion isn't nessecarily true. My rebuttals to each point are in red:
1.) Think of all the water you'll be saving, instead of wasting
You don't have to keep the water running while shaving. Fill a small plastic Tupperwear container with hot water and rinse your blade in that.
Well you do if your bathroom is always cold, it's much warmer with the water running. Only in summer it would be doable.
2.) Less likely that you'll accidentally leave your wet brush and more importantly, your wet razor in the shower. (Especially if you have kids.
The same could be said with it left on the sink. Keep an eye on your kids (or do like me and don't have them)
But he probably doesn't have it at the sink but high on a shelf or in a medicine cabinet.
Keep a eye on your kids?? Do you think you can know what they do 24/7?

3.) You'll never have to worry about what happens if you drop your razor. "Heads up"! (Literally
I've been shaving for 23 years and have never dropped my razor. Who does that?
People that have good soaps with plenty of lubricant glide 'n slide. And some handles have better knurling then others.
And then you have people who are not as young and strong as they use to be or shake when shaving.

4.) Less likely to slip and fall (especially if your wife uses tons of conditioner like mine does.)
Rince the bottom of your tub with water before you get in.
Probably leaves a micro film, since showering rinses it while you shower.
5.) The sink is smaller and easier to clean your stubble out of. Have a look at the bottom of your tub after you've turned the water off.
I've never seen shaving stubble not be able to be easily washed down the drain with shower spray after shaving.
That's probably true.
6.) Not having to spray down your mirror to remove the fog
I splash hot water once at the beginning of shaving and it stays that way. Water by the sink can fog up too in a hot bathroom.
It didn't stay that way for me. And my mirror never fogged up from filling the sink. And always did under the shower.
I don't use piping hot water but even the hottest water won't fog the mirror if it's done pre-shower.

7.) Never having to worry about burning yourself if someone flushes.
Again, turn the water off while you are shaving. Don't leave it running. You don't leave it running at the sink do you?
Again, it get's cold. Plus you can't use the word again if someone hasn't had time to respond to the previous comment.
8.) It's easier to listen to music while shaving when the water isn't constantly flowing
Yet again, turn the water off while shaving. You can actually hear a more pronounced shaving sound in the echo of the shower.
If your technique is good you don't need the sound, though it might help a little. Again?
9.) You don't have the worry of knocking over a scuttle off the ledge of your tub, OR your MWF dish.
Get a handy shower shelf (see photos below) Even before putting in this shelf recently I've never knocked anything off the ledge. Are you Jerry Lewis?
No, are you? Those things are always small. You sink might be a bit less cluttered but now your shower shelves are.
More efficient storing and extra storage space is the only true solution.
10.) Your *** will not look like it's sunburned from standing in a stream of hot water. (That's my wife's comment to me all the time.)
For the last time, turn OFF the water while shaving. You don't need to keep it running.
For the last time, NO!
Btw I have tried shaving in the shower and hated it.
