Shaving cream that Soothes?

Hi Guys,

I have relatively sensitive skin and always end up with some redness under the nose and on the neck. Most of the time it is actually pretty minimal and seems to be getting better with practice/angle etc however there is always some sort of redness/soreness.

I've recently been using GFT Sandalwood shaving cream and find it to be quite nice. I haven't really be wet shaving for long and this is the first cream I've used. I am looking at ordering some more shaving cream and wondered if any one had an opinion or could recommend a shaving cream that actually soothed whilst shaving? I don't seem to feel any form of soothing with the GFT stuff, as nice as it is...

Thanks for your input,

Nick.

Idk about a cream that "soothes".. However, I do suffer from "redness" here and there and a couple of the better creams I have tried for that are Castle Forbes Lavender, Truefitt and Hill ultimate comfort, and surprisingly Art of Shaving Sandalwood. Hope this helps.

I would recommend either the Proraso White or Proraso Blue creams - Great stuff meant for those with sensitive skin or looking for a calm post-shave feel.

For whatever reason the proraso white pre/post cream worked fine for my first week or so and after that seemed to burn when used post shave. The green pre/post works for me both pre and post, I just ordered the green AS, until now I've been using the pre/post cream as an AS.

I tend to associate the cooling with soothing, but the blue would probably work well too.

Of the ones I have tried...

  • Nancy Boy - any scent, but the "replenishing" might be the best bet.
  • TOBS avocado
  • KMF lavender & shea

People also speak highly of GFT coconut, I think.

You could try a menthol soap/cream to numb the nerve endings, but you're probably better off with a good after shave balm.
And less pressure while shaving :)

My (limited) experience with a menthol cream is that it tempts me to apply too much pressure, because of the lacking feedback.

For me a good and soothing cream is Palmolive Classic. Another one I like for that reason is Gada Cool Mint from Lebanon, and sold very cheaply where I live.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I had looked at the Proraso Blue, looks like it might be a good option with its Aloe and Vitamin E ingredients, I think I'll grab some and give it a test.

Thanks again, Nick.

The price on the Palmolive is certainly very nice! Can afford to test it and throw if its no good for me!

Thanks for mentioning that one because I had completely forgotten about it. It's a VERY soothing cream with a little menthol cooling to it.

Thanks for the input! Any suggestions on best shave balms! Am currently using GFT Skin Food, sandalwood, but happy to test other stuff!

Nivea Sensitive ASB gets a lot of love here on B&B, its usually a great price too...

Thanks Reevers, Yeah i did try that when I first started DE shaving but because of bad angle/pressure the burn/irritation caused was pretty bad and I didn't seem to find it that great. Having said that my angle and pressure have improved considerably and my burn/irritation is no where near as bad as it used to be. I think I'll check it out, might grab some next time Im at the grocery store....

I first tried the balm after a pretty shocking shave (in my earl days) and wasn't that impressed either, however now if I do get some razor burn I use WH. When I use Nivea ASB after a normal shave I find it really soothing.

The first things that come to mind are Maca Root Shaving Cream (http://www.thebodyshop-usa.com/men-product/men-product-bath/for-men-maca-root-shave-cream.aspx) and The Shave Den's Wheat Shaving Cream (http://www.theshavedenshop.com/index.php?_a=product&product_id=159). The Maca Root comes in only one scent, but the Wheat Shaving Cream comes in many to choose from. If you want a menthol kick, get SubZero plus extra menthol for 50 cents extra.
