Shaving at the gym

Does anybody shave at the gym in the morning before work? I just joined a gym for the first time in a long time and went for a workout before work. I showered and got dressed for work at the gym and came straight to work. I shaved last night because I wasn't sure how much of a pain it would be to bring all my stuff to the gym and do it there. I don't have a permanent locker, so I can't leave stuff there. It just seems like a lot of work to have to haul it all with me. I was wondering what any of you do if you hit the gym in the morning and then go to work from there.

I don't shave at the Gym, but just wanted to say congrats on joining a gym! It can lead to life changing experiences.

I always shave after my morning workouts. It's a really nice way to cap off a good workout, or a great way to compensate for a not-so-good workout (i.e. a workout done while hungover... what can I say... I live in a country where the beer tends to be cheaper than water in most restaurants and pubs).

Can't you leave your kit at reception? Even if you have to carry it with you while in the gym, I don't think it should be that much of a hassle.

I say go for it! Just be sure to clean the sink after you're done. :biggrin1:

Before I started working at 6am ( my gym opens at 5:30am) I would go in and after my workout shower and shave before heading off to work. It is more a personal preference thing. I have used both straights and DE's at the gym.

I have my travel grooming bag that I use which holds a container of MamaBears and my brush and razor.

I shave at the gym in the morning myself. Although I do not have a permanent locker you should be able to get one during your time at the gym. I usually bring a Gillette superspeed in a Weishi case with a cheapo Omega boar brush with Proraso in the Green Tub (plastic).

Thanks, we'll have to see how long it lasts. I'm not the most motivated person in the world. With two kids and a SWMBO that works nights, while I work days, it's going to be very difficult to find time to go. I can't believe I got up at 5:30 and made it there this morning, I am totally not a morning person.

I think I might be able to rent a locker permanently but have to check. I don't know what I would want to leave there though, I have so much stuff I wouldn't want to be without any of it at home. I suppose I could just pick one razor, cream, and brush and leave them there. At this point I'm not sure how often I am going to make it there in the morning. If it's nearly every day this would probably be the way to go I suppose.

I saw a couple of guys shaving with cartridges when I was leaving the locker room.

I guess if I should figure out how to face lather, then there's one less thing to bring or leave if I skip the mug.

I am retired now so I don't usually shave at the gym. However, there are times when I workout, shave, and then have an engagement. What I take with me at those times is my travel-shave kit which consists of a DE,razor, shave stick, travel brush, and small bottle of WH. Doesn't take up much room or weight and works fine.

Plus, it is always interesting the comments and questions you get when you use a brush and DE! :001_smile

I'm not sure that I want any naked dudes chatting me up in the locker room though :blushing:.

Seriously, what's up with that? Most of them walk around with the towel hanging over their shoulder and their junk hanging out. Is it that hard to put the towel around your waist until you get to the shower?

LOL... what's worse is guys who simultaneously towel off and pose in front of the mirror, either right beside or behind me while I'm shaving. I'm always so tempted to say, "If you can afford a gym membership, you can afford a goddamn full-length mirror for your home."

Then there are the guys who do porn-star grunts while cold showering after sitting in the sauna...

But I digress... to keep your kit small, definitely get a shave stick and take up face lathering. I stopped using a mug when I accidentally dropped mine on the changing room floor :blushing: I found my shaves actually got better.

My first thought from the OP's first post (as always, beaten to the punch!) Some sort of exhibitionism. My wife says some chicks are the same in the other locker room!

To contribute: If I were to shave at the gym, it'd be brush, Speick stick, Gillette Tech. I might consider a brushless cream and leave the brush at home. All of my gym shaving was done in my pre-DE days with a cart razor and goo.

I almost want to join a gym just so I can bring along a str8 and brush. :thumbup1:

Not anytime soon since I need a bit of time to get comfortable enough with the str8 to try it in public, but it would be fun.

Wow, I don't know. A gym is nothing but a giant petri dish, nice and moist and a perfect place for germs to grow. I think the majority of people would have no problem the majority of the time, but the downside is considerable, like a case of MRSA. I certainly would not want to cut myself in a gym. Heck, they had a case of MRSA in the US House gym!

I'd submit that an audience of naked dudes would be better than one of women. If naked fellers were roaming about I'd be certain not to take my eyes off of my face the entire shave.

Yes, I do both, go to the gym and shave in the bathroom in the locker room.

I generally use a DE or an SE but from time to time I'll use a straight. And yes, that really does get some looks.

Nothing more manly than an image of a guy shaving himself with a cutthroat razor .... enjoy the "wish i could do that" looks .... and forget where the towels are.

My observations suggest that this is a generational preference. Seems that men over 40 years or so have no problem with nudity in the locker room at the gym. While the younger men go so far as to change their shorts only in the privacy of the shower stall.

I think it's what we're taught in school. Back in the 1960s, from the time I was in 4th grade, we were all forced to strip down and shower after each gym class. You get used to it fast. I don't know if they still do this in school or not.

I would definitely agree with your assessment as it is usually the older gentlemen that I see doing this. Some of the younger ones even wear swim trunks to take a shower.

I don't think we took showers after gym at my school, I don't ever remember doing it, and that was almost 20 years ago for me.

Definitely shave the night before. I generally shave the night before since my morning too consists of a visit to the gym. I wear my workout clothes and carry a garmet bag with clothes (shirt & pants or suit, and a gym bag with shoes and other stuff.

Unless you have a really fast growing beard, you should be fine well into the next afternoon.

THIS..... CA (community aquired)- MRSA is a lifelong (and growing) problem.
Getting rid of it is almost impossible, and the treatment is just as rough.
Were way too familiar with MRSA...believe me. Pretty much crippled my wife....damn near killed her. Were fortunate it was not CA... and the "Vanco" knocked it out. She was so sick... hard to believe it was 4 years ago already.
I could put a pic or two up...that would pretty much change your mind about shaving in any public place... I don't care how seemingly clean the facility is....or how careful you think you are.
Please be extremely careful fellas.
