Shaving at the End of the (Fourth) World

You may have heard that this week marks the end of the 13th B'ak'tun in the Mayan calendar. Maybe we will see the end of the Fourth World as well - or maybe not. Either way my Christmas shopping is done.

This seems like a fine occasion to break out some especially hedonistic shaves. I plan to start tomorrow and keep going for the duration. For Monday I will unwrap a NOS shave stick by Erasmic, still in its cellophane, and use it for the first time. As the week goes on... well, I have a few other pieces of gear that are reasonably nice.

Rooney 3/1 finest
Gillette NEW De Luxe Belmont/Criteron-style
Schick Plus Platinum
Erasmic stick (NOS - first shave)
Pinaud Clubman Special Reserve (vintage barber sample)

What about you? Planning any special shaves for the end times?

Wow! What a way to go. Be sure to put the gear somewhere safe when you're done so archeologists 1800 years from now won't have trouble figuring out what it is. If you can find a clay table and a stylus you might even leave a note about it.

The NOS Erasmic was kind of a problem. It had what looked like yellow marbling until I removed the cellophane, then it was creamy white. I could smell the tallow, but I think some of the original scent was still hanging around too. New, the stick was about 56-g new, and I used 2/3-g this morning. The problem? The lather was so good that I would regret not finishing it up.

Can a mod please add another 90 days to the Long Count? Or should I PM Art?

Wow, nice. Super jealous of that stick. I hadn't planned anything special, but I may crack open a new stick of Sir Irisch Moos.

Maybe this week will teach me a lesson about keeping NOS stuff around. Soap is meant to be used, and I think this stuff is even better than my vintage Williams sticks.

The brush is a test set at about 46-mm, and it feels good there. The handle looks and feels exactly like a Rooney 3/1, even down to the faux ivory figuring. It came to me as a Penworks brush, model STR1-22. The original knot was a good latherer, but too lofty and too prickly to compete with the other evidence of my SBAD. The new Finest XH knot has those hooked tips and that flare or bulge of hair above the plug, so it stays snug in the handle without any glue at all.
