Shavette an instant hit!

An instant hit to my shaving ego! Talk about unforgiving! I've been shaving with straights for going on a year now, and I've NEVER had cuts or irritation like this! And this would sound crazy anywhere else, but the shavette just didn't have the "romance" of my straights... I'll probably give it another tr or two, but I'm afraid I'm hooked on straights (Straights neat if you will!). Anyhow, just wanted to add my 2 cents...

....shavettes with Feather blades are most wicked.........

.........and as you mentioned, very unforgiving...........

I did use a blade I was unfamiliar with (Shark), along with the new razor... I was a Derby guy when I DE shaved, how do Sharks stack up in sharpness compared to Derby's?

If you can get your technique down with the shavette, you will get some really close comfortable shaves. My kamisori approach the sharpness of a shavette, so mastering the shavette improved my technique with the kamisori as well.

Then again, if you are getting perfectly nice shaves already, and not getting similar results with a shavette, why bother? Maybe look at it as a challenge .

I have and use a Parker SR1 once and a while. I can get great shaves with it (used properly) but it is certainly the least forgiving tool in a diverse tool chest of shaving instruments.

After shaving with a shavette, I looked like I dove through a rose bush. Yet I can shave, nickless, with a straight.

They are unforgiving, but I guess if you can master one, you can shave with anything.

The technique for a shavette is definitely different from a straight. It takes a while to get used to the lighter blade and different angle. It can be a nice shave. Totally agree that it is unforgiving of technique.

There was this guy on YouTube that shaved with a DE blade glued to a chopstick. So yeah, you could shave with anything

At first the blade felt like a full hollow (I'm partial to fuller blades), but the walking face first through a rose bush is about right! I'll try a shallower angle next time, and let you know!

Shaving with any kind of disposable blade straight is going to be a bit different from a regular straight, but remember both are open bladed razors.

The sharpness of the disposable can't be matched by any regular straight, and as such if you use too much pressure you leave yourself open for the nicks, cuts, and all the irritation you can handle. You need a really light touch with the disposables, but once you get their use down IMHO the closeness of the shave can't be matched.

I started with the Feather AC straight, cut my teeth on it, got it down, and then tried the regular straight. After using the Feather, the regular just couldn't match the shave results. Now all I use are disposable blade straights, and I'll take them over regular straights any day.

I'm having fun learning with a cheap shavette. A sometimes painful learning experience, but a learning experience nonetheless.

When I started with straights, I also bought a Parker thinking it would be a good 'backup' since I only had one straight (that soon changed but I digress). I shaved once with the Parker and decided that it was just too edgy to be enjoyable. I saved it for touch up - at which it was very good.

When I went to Feather ACs, I bought a cheap used AC thinking I might dislike them and have yet another 'toucher upper'. As it ended up, the ACs and clones are now my favorite for daily shaving although I regularly use traditional straights, too. To me, the Feather AC is in a different class and is much easier to use than the shavette. The shavette is a tool - but it isn't my tool of choice. I would rather use DE blades in a DE and would probably go back to DE if shavettes were all that were available.

I shaved this morning with my quarter grind 5/8 (my favorite and most used blade). I didn't want to go to church bleeding!

I was inquiring of Ladykate if he'd used his Parker lately. His post seemed to say he had only tried it when first dabbling in straights.

Sorry Seraphim, I thought you were inquiring of me! lol, I'm now curious too, Ladykate, have you returned to the Parker after regular straights?
