Shavemac D01 versus Thater

Does anyone know how dense Thater brushes are compared to a comparable Shavemac D01? I am thinking about getting a 24mm Thater.

As a matter of comparison of density, a 25mm Shavemac D01, which I have and love, has 26 grams of Silvertip compared to 20 grams in a regular 25mm Shavemac.

So, how much Silvertip (weight) does a 24mm or 25mm Thater have?

Any info that can help me make up my mind would be appreciated.

Thanks,
-Robert

I have a couple H.L. Thater Brushes, the pure and the "Chubby II" silvertip.

The Chubby is extremely dense, i haven't used a shavemac D01, but i can say the Thater is an great brush; softest tips i've known and a great bulb shape.

Thanks Josh :thumbup1:

Pretty sure the Thater brushes are closer to standard Silvertip.
Shavemac's D01 is much denser and has more backbone.

(I've only used Shavemacs though, can't be sure)

Me too...that's why I wanted to make sure that there's enough "heft" to the brush before getting it. I don't like floppy ones...Shavemacs fit the bill for me...they are soft but have backbone too. beard likes it. It gets the creme to where it needs to be

The Thater brushes are VERY soft, and have the tips of 2 band super. The Thater feels like a cloud pillow floating on your face. It sounds like you might want a little more backbone.

Agree. We just got a few in stock the other day and I was very impressed by how soft they were. We don't carry any ShaveMac brushes, but the 'denseness' ranks pretty high among the ones we carry.

Got my 24mm Thater with olive handle...a thing of beauty :thumbup1:. First thing I noticed is how dense this thing really is...it does compare to the shavemac in that regard, not quite, but generously so. I would say 80% close. I have not used it yet as I am breaking my Vestivia brush for now, but this thing also has a lot of backbone...it does not feel flimsy :thumbup1:. But, the real test would be in the field...with lather and all

Stay tuned for when I report on the results of this field test (perhaps July, sometime)

Hi guys,
My sincerest apologies for making you wait...I just had to find a few minutes of time (and this weekend seemed to be the one) to take the quick pictures for you all to see.

The comparison is between a 25mm Shavemac D01 and a 24mm Thater (both silvertip)

1. The brushes in dry condition (Thater - right , Shavemac - left)

2. The brushes in full bloom (Thater - left , Shavemac - right)

Well folks...as for the details (as tested)

A. Size (dry)
the pictures say it all. Even though the Shavemac is 1mm bigger in knot size, the brushes don't seem too different in their dry condition as far as size.

B. Size (wet - full bloom)
However, the shavemac blooms a good 10-20% wider compared to the Thater (even though, the size difference is only 1mm)...this is more apparent when the bloom is viewed from the top. The density of the brushes seem to be fairly close

C. The shave (subjective)
The lather (not shown) and shave for both was FANTASTIC!!. The Shavemac, to me, seems to have a stiffer backbone. Both have ultra soft tips...unbelievably luxurious feel. Also, on my face, it feels as if the density of the Shavemac is more substantial than the Thater

D. Lather hogs?
Again, the Shavemac sucks more creme to lather up, but when it does, it performs like no brush. The Thater is more reasonable in this regard and seems to take ~20 seconds less to make lather!! This was a bit surprising to me since I would have bet my money on the Shavemac with its stiffer backbone . But, YMMV.

I have ordered a 24mm Shavemac (regular or non-D01) from Bernd, but haven't received it yet. When I do, another comparison will be in the works...This will provide for a fairer comparative metric to the 24mm Thater..."Apples to Apples", so to speak

. Will keep you posted in due course and time.

I will also post pictures of the brushes lathered up (which I didn't have time to do this time)

Let me know if there's anything you'd like to see in this upcoming comparison...something that I may very well have forgotten or not considered.

Cheers,
Robert

Great post! I am not very familiar with Thater brushes, so it is really nice to read such a thorough comparison.
I would actually recommend that you take the pictures and descriptions and turn them into a review so that others can benefit from this knowledge.

Thank you for this direct comparison. I agree that all things aren't exactly equal, but it's the closest I've seen.

Thank you for the kind words Hunter...I am thinking about doing just that, but I will wait 'til I get my Shavemac 24mm for a more direct comparison

Thank you :001_smile,
Robert
