Shavemac 22714

I have decided on the Shavemac 22714, which can be seen here http://www.shavemac.com/shop/products/Shaving-Brushes/Finest-Badger/Shaving-Brush-22714.html as my first high quality brush. I have read the single review here on the forum, but aside from that there is really no information on this site about this brush. Is anyone here using it and care to comment? Also, besides ordering it directly from Germany, are there any other vendors of this model? I know WCS and a few others sell Shavemac, but I have not found this model for sale anywhere but direct. Thank for all replies.

That's a great brush, but instead of placing an order on that page make sure you email Bernd of Shavemac and ask for a (free) custom brush with a shortened loft. It will really take the performance up a notch!

+1. I'd make sure it has a 50mm loft (or less... I like 45mm).

Thanks for the replies and suggestions. Is the consensus then that the same brush with a shorter loft will be more desirable than ordering one as is due to the increase in backbone strength that a sorter loft will give? What are the drawbacks to having a short loft? How short is too short?

For me, there are no drawbacks to having a brush with a 45 to 50mm loft. I had a Shavemac Finest with a 60mm loft once, and it was way too floppy. I now have a D01 with a 50mm loft and a Finest with a 45mm loft. They're both wonderful. I really wouldn't recommend going shorter than maybe 40mm, but that's really quite extreme. I'd stick with 45 to 50mm.

Thanks again. The regular loft on that brush is 52mm. I use creams exclusively. Will a few millimeters shorter loft make any difference for me? I am just wondering if it is worth it to wait for the custom brush to be made if there will be no noticeable performance gain for my application. All responses are appreciated.

The difference between 52mm and 45mm is huge. Just 4mm will actually make a noticeable difference. The whole cream or soap issue is a moot point for me. I like firm, short-loft brushes no matter what or how I'm lathering. If you think you'd like the feel of a less firm brush on your face, go with 52mm. If you think a firmer brush sounds good, I'd go with 45mm to 48mm. Either way, the tips will be really soft and the brush will work great for soaps or creams, bowl or face lathering. We're sort of talking preference at this point.

+1 to everything Andy's said!

Even a one or two millimeter difference in loft changes a brush's performance drastically. Trust me, you won't regret it! :001_smile

I would recommend a 45mm loft, but since you are a cream user, you could make it 48mm and still be very happy with it.

Let us know what your decision is, and be sure to post pictures of the brush when you receive it!
