shave with shell

I try to sharp a shell for shaving but no function , I think the story about in the pass time the man shaving with a shell is no true , I tried and tried and no work .

Shells may be pretty, but they don't hold an edge. Bone and ivory are a little better, but on the whole I prefer flint or obsidian.

I seem to recall reading that shells were typically used in a depilatory fashion, meaning you'd use a pair of them like tweezers and actually pluck hairs rather than shave them.

I salute you for trying though:thumbup1:

The last time I saw that was on Flinstones...

Since clams shells are layered you can't work them in the same manner as flint or obsidian. But I'm sure a thin layer of shell can still cut you.

Please don't post here that the shaving shells work good. All it does is drive up the price of shaving shells on Ebay.

Under extreme magnification, obsidian blades show a smoother edge than stainless steel razors do. The steel edge appears to have pits, porosity, and other discontinuities, where the obsidian edge appears smooth and even with very few discontinuities.
