Shave sticks in the US

Gentlemen,

Currently visiting from OZ for three months. I only bought one shave stick with me intending to buy as needed. It is just my imagination or have Walgreens and CVS stopped carrying them. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Currently in Kansas (yes I have heard all the YOUR GOING TO KANSAS JOKES).

Bob

Where ya' at? I'm in the wichita area, so if you are near, I have some Ogallala Bay Rum samples that could easily be melted into an empty stick container. Or get a quick order in if you are going to be in the area for a little while. OBR is a terrific shave stick out of Nebraska. If you are in my area, we might be able work something out with a shipping address for you. Sticks are scarce in the B&M stores around here.

Thanks Luc

I was in Oak Park Mall yesterday, but did not find anything in the nominated stores. I just looking for Arko/Palmolive.

Bob I'm sorry to say that the US - especially the Midwest - is mostly oblivious to the whole traditional wet shaving thing. There's no shave sticks to be had that I know of at the corner pharmacy/grocery store. Unless you're lucky enough to encounter a specialty shop you probably won't find anything beyond VDH and Williams.

I'd say the only places you'd find shave sticks in B&M stores would be places like Pastuer in New York or Merz in Chicago. Definitely not in Walgreens or CVS, sorry to say.

Pastuer in New York is the ONLY place I have ever seen a shave stick in the United States in a brick and mortar store.

Pretty much NO shaving supplies are sold here in the US any more. WalMart carries VDH soap pucks, CVS carries Williams soap pucks, WALMART no longer sells any kind of SE or DE blade, I rarely see SE blades at CVS, and Wal Greens has VDH, and occasional SE and DE blades at INSANE prices. SOMETIMES i can find Aqua Velva, Skin Bracer, or Old Spice in the store. rarely.

I have had decent luck at the Indian Groceries that I have found. I have found one near my house that carries Godrej cream and SHULTON India Old Spice Original and Lime cream.

besides this I am afraid your choices are slim.

What part of KC? I have an Arko stick you can have.

It is hard enough to find Williams Mug Soap around here, and shave sticks simply don't exist in stores.

You were about 2 minutes from me. I've got a half used La Toja stick you could have if you wanted. Unfortunately I just grated my other sticks a few days ago.

Sorry man, I've never known any US drug stores to carry shave sticks later than probably the 70's or 80's. Traditional shaving gear is pretty much non-existent in the US brick and morter places except for the AOS stores, as mentioned, and some specialty shops in the big cities.

You might be able to find pucks of VDH or Williams if you look around. You could use that as a stick...

Thanks to all that have posted in reply. Have moved on to Colorado and if all else fails I will have to get one of those...well you know what I mean.

Wow! And I thought *our* stores were badly stocked nowadays!

Did the whole soap and brush thing really get wiped out from the B&M stores? Surely the older generations still demand the soap/creme they are used to from time to time?

That sounds bad

Soap and brush have been out of favor with the main stream in the US since the 60's (and maybe before then) Canned goo started to become very popular in the 50's, and was available since the 40's. Of course there were folks that held on, I'm sure, but the market would have been really small post the 70's or 80's. As I mentioned however, VDH and Williams pucks are available in a few places.

I guess your VDH and Williams take the same position as our Vergulde Hand, Wilkinson, and Palmolive ... those are the only products you can expect to find in a regular supermarket. Drug stores typically have a larger assortment.
