Shave Secret shaving oil - WOW!

I picked up this tiny bottle of Shave Secret http://www.shavesecret.com/ shaving oil from Walmart the other day, as it says "use only 3 drops" and nothing else. Skeptical, I tried it, following the directions exactly. Used my Merkur HD and Derby blade. I was shocked how well it worked! 3 drops of the stuff, nothing else, no cream, no brush.

Has anyone else used it? I have hard water and it worked pretty well. I can only imagine how well it would work with soft water.....

Perhaps there's a way to combine it with a cream to make it even better?

I use it as a pre shave, works really well. Good scent, good feeling. I find it complements Speick SC wonderfully.

I love Shave Secret. I have been trying to blend my own oil for home use (just Google shave oil recipes), but I haven't been able to get it down to the viscosity/thickness of Shave Secret. The oil I currently use is a blend of Olive and Castor oil - a little thick. I think if I get some grapeseed oil then that will thin my recipe out. Even Olive oil alone works really well, but you have to use more of it and it is harder to rinse off. I'll sometimes use oils as a pre-shave, but I think I really prefer to use it alone most of the time.

I actually just gave Shave Secret a go not half an hour ago.

No brush, no cream, no soap. Just the oil (4 drops) and a Merkur Classic with a Feather (2nd use on the blade).

Slick stuff. GREAT protection... while it lasts. Despite what the directions say, splashing more hard water onto your face does not do the trick entirely.

I'll probably use it as a pre-shave oil from now on. I bought it to try out in case it worked well. Much easier to travel with than a brush, soap, cream, and *** + ASB. (normal routine)

I love the smell. I love the feel. I just wish it lasted a bit longer.

I'll probably give it another go, just in case.

I have tried many creams, preshave oils etc but i have now settled on using just a shaving oil (Somersets) which is available here in the UK. It is basically the same as the Shave Secret oil and it has transformed my shaving. A feather blade in my slant and a BBS every time with no irratation after multiple passes, really worth trying IMO.

Somersets is really good stuff. The original version is better than the "sensitive" variant. Works well as a "weeper stopper" too, which is a bit surprising

I think shave oil in general helps with weepers - probably because the oil hold a pressure barrier against the blood blocking it from the outside.

I also use a Feather with my slant and get a BBS everytime with Shave Secret and my own oil blends.

I can't use Shave Secret on its own, but it is a great pre-shave.

+1

I tried ShaveSecret on its own, just like the directions indicate. I got a great shave from it, but it gunked up my razor something fierce.

ShaveSecret works best as a PSO before soap, or as an additive, either to cream or ASB, or both ... but using it just by itself is something I don't want to go through again.

I've tried EVOO and SS oil. I find myself using the SS much more often. However, after I either do a facial scrub or take a shower, I use the SS/EVOO and then use a cream or a soap. I think it really helps my beard, which I rate as really tough. Even with a Feather, three shaves is the max. I'm lucky to get one out of a Walmart blade. I think using the oil, any oil, really, helps a lot.

I like to use SS as a pre shave with Proraso. At first I was worried that it would overpower the Proraso, but they go together well. If you though proraso would freeze your face, put a little SS under it.

When you say you use it as a pre shave, what exactly does that mean? Just apply it to my face, then apply my shaving cream with the brush as normal? If so, do you re-apply it for each pass?

Yes - when using as a pre-shave I just put it on before I lather with a brush. It sticks well, so I don't have to apply it for each pass. If anything, I might add a palm full of water, but no extra oil.

But doesn't it get messy? Oil over the sink and your razor etc?

The Shave Secret washes down the drain well with HOT water. Olive Oil might take a few seconds longer with HOT water, but in general, it all washes down the sink well as long as you don't exceed 10 drops or so. (FYI, I use about 6 drops of Shave Secret, and a little more for my thicker homemade blends).

SSecret + proraso = strange numbing tingly sensation.

Used as a PSO today rather than alone. Super lather with VDH deluxe, (which has been garnished with a little rose water) and Proraso.

Really wasn't too bad.

I use Shave Secret as a pre-lather, using my hands to apply the oil. And my brush is coated in thick creamy lather so none of that ever gets on my brush. You don't use much oil anyhow; it is very effective.. I have had tremendous success using Shave Secret and the menthol sensation is exactly what I like as I am a huge Proraso fan. Give this stuff a try, it isn't super pricey; you can't go wrong with it.
