Shave ready on Ebay ?

Hi Gentlemen....

I was looking in buying a first REAL straight for Christmas...and with a budget of around 50$

I'm now using a Parker SR1 shavette for some time..and want to make the plunge.

I don't want it to be pricey...as I don't know if i will like the honing part.

I stumbled on quite a few Shave ready on Ebay. ( This one, in particular : http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gold-Dollar-208-Carbon-Fiber-SHAVE-READY-Cut-Throat-Straight-Razor-Barber-Salon-/290774701176?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43b385d478 )

1- Are they worth it..?

2- Anything i should keep an eye for ? ( Except the round tip..as I am a newbie )

3- Are they REALLY shave ready ?...as some mentioned Ready to Shave ( Wich, i guess, is playing with words...)
:sneaky2:

Your suggestion are greatly welcomed !

PS: I know about Whipped Dog..but i really like to see what I'm buying....

That's a 3 dollar razor. I wouldn't give that much for one. Look on BST for one that is "shave ready" and you can be rest assured it will be as advertised.

The apperience is secondary to the edge. But ask Larry if he could show you a couple.

BST. stay away from ebay until you are more familiar. if its honing you need? send it my way. i'll hone it for free if you cover the return shipping.

I cant comment on the actual razor as I have never used one.... but a few things jump out at me.

That seller has 100% positive feedback.

Secondly, hes sharpening those razors himself- that kinda suggests he knows a thing or two about them and since all he really seems to sell is straights I doubt hes going to risk that 100% perfect rating on some crappy razors.

And lastly you can return it in 14 days if your not happy. So you could return if its not as good as he described.

Personally I reckon it would be a safe enough bet. But still, it would be nice to hear from someone who actually has/used one.

It's probably shave ready, but as others have pointed out, it's a $10 razor at most. Actually I have one coming as a practice strop razor and paid $10 shipped from eBay and even that was probably too much If I want it made shave ready, many members have offered to tweak it for me it for the cost of shipping. So lets say $6 each way, I'm still only at $22 total.

I'd check the BST and/or post a "wanted to buy" and you'll be amazed at what might present itself. Stop in the Straight section on here too. There's is currently an Ugly Shave Ready PIF running that you would qualify for.

I'm brand new to straights as well, so take my advise with that in mind. I did a bit of research and such before buying, from the BST and got about $200+shipping worth of razor and strop for $100 shipped.

Larry also has some site half seen deals and have seen some pics of specials he does on eBay.

I would avoid the bay. I have gotten a few "shave ready" razors from high rated sellers with edges that were ok at best. Shave ready is a really relative term that is guaranteed to vary from person to person.

The Gold Dollar razor is one that costs about 5.00 shipped. If you post a WTB for a shave ready GD someone will be happy to sell you one for much cheaper I am sure, and guaranteed shave ready to boot. That ebay price is too high.

Get a sight unseen from Whipped Dog. What ever you get, your technique will be off and you will THINK the razor is not sharp, it's your technique, not the razor! WD is a safe bet and not much money if straights are not for you.
