I've been wanting to try a pre-shave oil. I recently went to the store to pick up a bottle of American Crew. While I was there I saw Shave Secret and picked it up too because it was so cheap and figured what the heck. I haven't tried them yet. Both of these are marketed as shave oil. Is there a difference between shave oil and pre-shave oil?

I first tried pre-shave oil while getting a straight shave at a Turkish Barbers. He said that pre-shave oil is a bit thicker and is designed to hold water on you your face helping to hydrate the skin and soften the whiskers and to offer some extra protection under a lather, while shave oil is designed to give slickness and can be used on its own. Though he recommended using a lather for the first pass and then the shave oil once the growth was reduced.
Some oil is used to shave with, instead of lather. That's what I think of as a shave oil.
The American Crew is a good product. I have shaved with it on its own with a Schick cart to good effect, and have also used it as a pre-shave oil under lather. The cinnamon and cloves smell is really nice.
