I use two old stainless steel Danish gravy servers that came out of the back of my kitchen cabinet to make lather in. After trying lots of other bowls/mugs these seem to be the best that I have found. They are both marked Leonard Denmark 18/8 (stainless)

The large one is 5 3/4" across by 2 3/4" deep and perfect for my larger brushes like the Polo 12 and Rooney 3xl

The smaller one is 5 1/4" across by 2 1/2" deep and perfect for my smaller brushes like the Kent BK8

I've had these two bowls for 20 years or so. Never realized how useful they were until I joined B&B and started looking for more things to make lather in Before joining B&B I had always face lathered (always as in for the past 45 years)

If these look interesting you can go to the gravy boat section of eBay and type in either Denmark or Danish (or stainless if you want to wade through a whole pile of them) you will come up with a lot of them. The rim on the bottom makes it easy to hold and it catches any lather that over flows the bowl which helps keep things a little less messy in the shave den.

Robert Becker medium scuttle, Robert Becker shave bowl and lid, Starbucks Chicago coffee mug, West Coast Shaving hand-thrown bowl.

I have a modified Bill Bowl from Dirty Bird pottery. I find the swirls on the bottom help with making lather over the smooth bowl (which I dropped and broke) I was using before.

I'm not into scuttles at all right now but I used to use this when I bowl lathered:

$scuttle.jpg

It's ordered from Connaughtshaving a few years ago. It's now discontinued I think.

I use this glasscontainer for my soaps and grated soaps:

I found it at a antiques shop. The Cointreau glass for wetting the brush was also found in the wild outside Stockholm, Sweden.

If I do need to build lather in a mug I use this:

I found it in our kitchen a few years ago!:001_cool:. The brush is a custom Shavemac 23/53 for size reference.

Stainless double wall bowls:

Not perfect but they do the job. The double wall keeps the lather relatively warm, nothing compare to a proper scuttle, but acceptable. The inside wall has a bulge close to the edge so the lather stays in.
I am still looking for the perfect one.

I found that Proraso white tub has a very sharp lip and I had to move the croap into the stainless bowl. I am generous with my lather and don't skimp, but this croap lasted since March 1st (it was the croap month) and will not quit. I think I have enough for another month.

Not the best quality pic but the metal bowl I use with the Dettol, pictured in the bottle to swirl my razor in before using it. The ceramic bowl is one I painted ages ago as a child at a birthday party. Funnily enough the "theme" I had was water. Kind of fits the purpose and has more meaning to me.

Here's what I have for bowl lathering but I must admit I'm a face latherer most of the time. In fact I've also a scuttle stored away somewhere..

I'm totally satisfied with my 'Catcus Sand' Medium Scuttle w/ Lid by Robert Becker. He gets 'alota' love here because he is such fine 'Potter' with great customer service!

NOTE: I replaced the rubber stooper with a wine cork (perfect & tight fit), because at times...the rubber stopper would 'pop' inside the Scuttle (no problem fishing it out), due to the pressure/steam from the hot water, but I've found that using a wine cork works much better in keeping the heat in the scuttle, plus it looks 'cooler'

I also have my Sterling Silver Baby Cup (as my 'travel' soap mug...which is engraved with my full name & birth date and these engraved quotes;

"To Smoke is Human...To Smoke Cigars is Divine" and "A Great Lather is Half the Shave"

Also, this mug is small enough (2½ inchs wide), to easily fit many soaps and at the same time being only 2 inchs deep, it prevents almost all shave brush 'clanking'.

Although I own and use my Becker Scuttle at times (10%), one benefit of face lathering is that it gives a great exfoliating sensation on my face which I find quite pleasing and look forward to every morning. After the first pass (WTG), and when I go for a 2nd (CTG), & 3rd (ATG),...I just re-lather with hot water and 'go' again.
