What's new

September is SABREtember! - Shavettes & Barber Razors (1st-30th Sept 23)

Prep: Bar soap & hot water
Razor: Parker SRX
Blade: Derby Extra
Soap: Palmolive
Post shave: Alum block
AS: Blue Stratos

I finally did it brothers, I had a complete shave with the SRX.

I went one pass WTG, one pass ATG mainly because I couldn't figure out how to do an XTG on my neck without wrecking myself).

I have some irritation at the throat, but it was 100% a BBS. The alum and the aftershave BURNED. 😂

I'm calling it a 9/10, because I had to dock a point for razor burn, otherwise an amazing (and quick) shave.

Congratulations. Its always nice when you stick at something and it pays off.

Shave no. 4 for me with the Schick blade in the AC Kami. No photo - you all know what it looks like by now!

Managed to make myself sore on my left-hand jawline today, which seems to be a difficult area for me. It's always a struggle to properly pick off the flat-growing hairs in that area with a WTG pass, but trying to take them down more effectively with a XTG pass often seems to cause irritation. I tend to have to use the toe of the blade with a slicing stroke and it doesn't always work!

I think it was me who was at fault today - I probably should have accepted some stragglers and moved on - but I also felt like the blade was starting to snag a little compared to a fresh blade. Generally, it feels like it has at least couple more shaves in it, but it's when I find myself applying pressure to pick off difficult hairs that the trouble starts, so if a fresh blade will take down those areas with no dramas then it's a trade I am willing to make. Let's see how this blade does on the next shave, and I will try and be a bit more careful!

Aftershave= B&M

Beautiful shave tonight. On the first pass WTG I got a couple of small wheepers on my chin. I slowed right down for the second XTG and everything started going really well again. Finished up with a CCS, very little stinging from the alum but I had more from the aftershave. Tell how that works 🤔.

Omega Hi Brush - Weleda Cream - Tondeo Sifter/Tondeo TSS3 (Japanese) - Myrsol Metilsol

I bought this several months ago and this is my first shave. Certainly a well made razor but the Type 77 insert is too thick at the spine so it looks as if I must use the 10x more expensive TSS blades. The result was very good although I suspect the Feather made blades will not last 10x longer!

I shaved with my Captain clone again today. Shave 5 on the Schick blade. Much better. Yesterday was clearly my fault. I reckon the blade will go again, but after that I might decide it's done - not least because I want to shave with some of my other shavettes before the end of the month!

Didn't get round to posting during the week. Looks like I've missed some good stuff, and with both Avon Spicy and Superdrug Forest Fresh appearing in the aftershave credits I feel like I'm with my own tribe. Anyhow :

Monday : Unbranded Chinese whole-DE shavette + Astra SP. I like this one, but it always seems wasteful as the edge inside the holder "goes off", so it's not jut a case of switching it round. Maybe if I marked it, dried it and turned it for every shave it would work out, but I'm far too lazy. Didn't even tweak the picture so it now looks like it's in stealth mode camouflaged against a dark flannel. That's how lazy I

Thursday : Parker PTPW + half Astra SP.

That is why allways search for shavettes for 1/2 blade. And don't like slim A77 blades. The blade inside goes wasted. Not wasted but full blade never last that much as two half-blades.

I vaguely remember that it is possible to fit A77 blade into Tondeo insert. Their notches at ends of insert fit. Holes in the middle of tondeo blades are shifted from centerline. If you remove the middle notch A77 should fit.
Do not know if it is so.

Have to say that I've had my eye on one of those Gentleman Barbier shavettes. Only thing that's held me back is the price, and that the blade loading area looks the same as the Parker SR1, which I did not like. But then again, I'm not shaving with Pond's Cold Cream alone and esoteric blades like the Mashiro. Maybe that's the trick...
Yeah, I thought long and hard about buying the Gentleman Barbier shavette. If I haven't got enough shavettes already!
However, the weight 37g and the balance drew me to it. I find shaving with a shavette is difficult and a challenge at the best of times, and when it arrived I was pleased that the blade exposure/reveal was only about 0.5mm which was another of my concerns. All I can say is it's well made, stylish, and the clamp really ensures that the blade is firmly clamped and doesn't move or drop. Mine has rosewood scales and was purchased from 1Barber in Belgium

Still working on my technique, this one gave me a nice little superficial cut on the cheek today. The SRB is not my favorite out of my little collection of shavettes so far. Wasn’t as easy as the Focus to find and angle and wasn’t as efficient and maneuverable as the PTABK.

Thanks for the follow-up.

Stirling Sheep (shave soap);
Semogue 2020 fine badger (shaving brush);
Focus 21 shavette w/Lord saloon-type dedicated half-blade (razor);
Christian Lenart Eau micellaire (astringent/post-shave).

A follow-up shave with the same saloon-type blade used last time loaded into the cheap Focus shavette with the plastic insert. This time, no nicks or unexplained weepers, and I could shave with relative abandon. Again, I urge folks to try the Focus 21 with the plastic insert. It costs ten bucks Stateside (not that I'm there) and shaves great.

Razor= AC generic straight
Blade= Schick Proline #2
Soap= Pamolive (mentioned)
Aftershave= Superdrug Sierran Breeze

Another nice shave this morning before church. After my second shave with the Prolines I can say IMHO these blades are smoother for my skin. Three passes WTG, ATG, XTG and some touch ups on the neck. No irritation or wheepers.
