September in Texas Means...

The hummingbirds are here on their migration to Mexico.

a couple of weeks back at mom's I got this:

"Just found out that hummingbirds chirp. Sitting on Mom's porch under a feeder. There is a ruby throated male defending this feeder hard. He's buzzed me a few times, hovered over my head a couple of times, and just looked me in the eye at about 8 inches. Pretty cool."

and this video of him, if it'll load:

A year or two back, I was at the Dallas Zoo and saw this little flying thing that I figured might be a moth or something. I saw one land and went over to take a look -- a tiny hummingbird of a sort I'd never seen before, certainly not a ruby. But it was very cool to see.

Now that temperatures seem to have slipped below 100, maybe we'll see the birds passing through.

Several people in my neighborhood have feeders up, and I put one out as well last summer after we moved in. I used to see a few out in the front yard every day, but this summer the visits were more rare. In July of this year we had several guests at our house for a week, and heard more activity in the back yard. After everyone left, I noticed a nest in a tree above the path around the side of my house. It was smaller in diameter than a soda can, and about 2 inches deep. Mom sat in there for several weeks while Dad buzzed my head whenever I wheeled the lawnmower under the nest. My daughters talked me into moving the feeder back near the base of the tree, to make sure they wouldn't have to venture too far for food. :biggrin1:

We saw at least one youngster last month, but the family seems to have moved out now. I hope they made it to Texas and parts beyond safely, and I hope we'll see them again next spring. They were entertaining neighbors.

I have always been enamored by hummingbirds.

Back in college, I would often try to capture images of them with a 35mm Canon Eos 10 and bought a nice lens just for that purpose. I got some good shots of them but have no idea whatever happened to those pics.

Now, my wife keeps a feeder up and we have the usual suspects who hover around it. They come to say "hi" while I am grilling or polishing my boots and it makes that menial task much more enjoyable when I have a visitor or two.

Now if I only had a wooden fence and could get some bluebird boxes up I'd have it made for birdwatching.
