SEPTEMBER 2018 SCORES

Ah, the fire of September, try to remember....

Yes, September and three quarters of the year is nearing, but so is the coolness of Autumn when it might be more pleasant to seek out the familiar places and perhaps new ones you could discover in search of that elusive find ... and, you never know, you may stumble on that special something because ...

The Scores do await, whether in the wild and on line. And when you find one, oh does it feel so good!

And Gents, when you snag one please let us know.

Because, we all want to see and think ... Lucky Dog! I need one of THOSE....

I ordered some stuff for my son - a complete PAA Rabid Banana set with shave soap, star jelly, cube w/base, and even a t shirt. It is his favorite scent and it is really good stuff. To get free shipping I picked up a few thing for me. 3 shampoo containers and a Meta Nectar AS. The surprising thing is that PAA is now shipping their AS' in nice boxes. I just received an order last week and it did not ship with the box. It is rather classy and a nice touch. First the cool new glass bottles with the bakelite caps and built in restrictors, now boxes. Doug recommended the Meta Nectar as a good match with the Rabid Banana Star Jelly so I tried it. We'll see.

I’m new to this site. But I picked up another razor at a small corner shop.

I liked the case it was in and from the forums here I assume it’s a gem triumph from 1924 patented 1912. Seems like most people have one on this site. I will try it out once I clean it up and order some blades for it, if I like it, I think it will be a nice travel razor. With a 15 dollar price I couldn’t really pass it up since the case looked and felt slick and smooth in my hand. A few scuffs on the razor head but nothing too deep. The blade that came with it fit well and used some calipers to measure it up and everything was even. So I’m looking forward this addition.

So I picked up a NOS mug of Old Spice soap and to my surprise it still smells of original Old Spice very strongly! 40+ years old. It must’ve been stored properly all these years. Really stoked on this pick up.

And this stuff came early this week. The new Crown King/PAA Bottles of aftershave are so nice. They really just ooze class. That 400ml bottle of original formula Aqua Velva is another purchase from Carethy.com. they also accept Paypal as payment now so that really speaks volumes to me as a customer. They know if anything goes wrong they are 100% on the hook now. Not like they weren’t before because you can always call your credit card company and have them stop payment but a lot of people don’t know they can do that. Also do yourself a favor and pick up one of the FS or Yaqi finest badger brushes they are inline with the most expensive brushes on the market today. They are the exact same knots to a T

Acquired near the end of August/beginning of September. A couple of more items are on the way but these are worth noting individually.

Few things from this week. Really stoked on the Gillette Sun Up/Slim razor set new in box. Also I’ve never seen Aqua Velva SPICE-EPICE scent before. It’s a scent unlike any other Aqua Velva I’ve ever smelled and I have them all..It’s almost a Shulton Old Spice scented aftershave. I wonder if they got in trouble producing it because I can’t find one lick of info on the inter webs about it. And finally the controversy soap and new Ascension razor from PAA. This razor is very well built and does actually adjust on the fly which I absolutely love. The controversy soap is yet another home run from PAA.

Two brushes. BAD is out of control. The top one is M&F's version of the Tulip. According to previous owners, Lee didn't make a lot of this handle style and this one has the Heritage 3 band hair. It's dense and has the backbone and scrub of a 2 band (I didn't expect that, but I like it). The bottom is a PK-47 Harlequin with the 2CLSD knot. I now have the CSLD and CLSD. I thought I was prepared for the beauty of the Harlequin, but this handle exceeds my wildest imaginings. My crappy camera and modest photography skills do not show it adequately.

The paladin is SO nice looking. The harlequin resin is one of my faves too. They are the only brush company I’m willing to support at the prices they charge. They do go the extra mile for sure.

This scuttle was a must have. It’s so funny looking. Reminds me of the Quaker Oats guy.

Almost all of my badgers were purchased second hand, with one or two of those being unused. I also have two that I won in raffles. However, I too have purchased a couple of Paladins brand new from Ken and co.

Hello. I understand B&B is not an appraisal website (I've read the rules). I'm simply asking for you guys' opinions as to whether I got "got" or I should take a chill pill. Not for monetary value. I bought this razor for $46 USD. With shipping and duties/brokerage fees/taxes, it ended at a total cost of $90 CAD (or $70 USD). The seller never showed any picture top-down or bottom-up for the razor. Described it as very clean, and the scales doing their purpose. I beg to differ.

As a seller, he doesn't accept returns. I could surely get the Money Back Guaranteed policy of Ebay to kick in. I want to know if you guys thought that, for $90 CAD, I had had an ok buy...I may end up keeping it if you guys think it's an alright find for what I paid (I guess you can also just exclude the $15 of duties from your minds if you want....so $75 CAD (item plus shipping)).

Cons (none of which were mentioned or shown by the seller):
-active rust around pivot
-even though pins seem to be bras top pin seems to have active rust
-tons of oxidation on the spine
-the celluloid side of the scales looked like it was two tones, but it's because it's cut and the White wedge is exposed (not even sure if that was intentional, or the scales just broke at some point...)
-Wood side is more than just not oiled or waxed. It's not sanded, and chipped in a few places.

Pros:
-Blade is superb, really, in my opinion.
-Stamps are good and deep, both on the blade itself and on the tang. Even after polishing or sanding a bit, they would still be popping for sure.

For $90 CAD, I still think I could have gotten a nice W&D, shave ready, with original box. This item is none of the latter (it's not shave ready, and did not come with a box). Maybe not with a cool swooping spine like that or really clear stamps, but, still..

You guys' thoughts?

Again, just to be clear. I'm not asking for a monetary value. Just a question of if you guys would keep it, looking at the photos, after having paid $90 CAD total (I think saying "$70 USD" is deceptive, since we, up here in Canada, don't make more an hour than you guys down south, so, in my opinion, it's more akin to paying $90 USD than paying $70 USD)?

I did have happy finds, though, I swear!:

40ish bucks.

Horse hide instead of cow hide, so older. Also older because it mentions "made in USA" rather than just saying "Chicago". In pretty good condition. Pretty happy!
