Semogue Quality?

Anyone have any issues with Semogue brush quality? Just today I received my brand new Semogue 1305 from a vendor who will remain anonymous until the issue is resolved. When I opened the box I notice that there was a residue on near the decal, which looked like that gunk you get from peeling stickers. It wiped off easily enough, but the decal has a dark ring around its edge from dust/dirt creeping in, that just makes it look like dirty, cheap sticker. On either side is a scuff mark along the flares that come out and the paint has been knocked off so that wood is visible. On the bottom is a large (~8mm) chip of paint missing from the white so that the green undercoat can be seen as well as a little wood. There is green paint scuffed onto the white, and several very small marks from where the paint dripped while dipping the brush. All of this seems to be from the manufacturing process, as opposed to just vendor handling. I mean, seriously? This is from the manufacturer of some of the highest regarded brushes on the B&B? I'm starting to wish I'd gone with the 1800, or even just a higher end Omega.

I have read that another member here has had issue with Semoque painted brush handles. I have been looking at one of the all acrylic or a stained wood handle Semoque boar brush.

Well I have a Semogue 2000 that the lacquer has been slowly chipping away on the brush. Glad I got mine before the price increase. Makes me definitely more leary of any wood handled brush. Gives me some concern for my 2015HD as well as that is more expensive, but I've seen very little in the way of people reporting problems with their Semogue brushes. Only one other person with the same Semogue 2000 here in this forum. Probably going to see if I can find a member here that can refinish it for me and how much it'd be.

I love the quality of the Semogue hair in their boar and badger brushes. Just got a 2040 here recently. Funny thing is I ordered a 2040HD but got a 2040 instead in a box that was supposed to be a 2040HD. I'm fine with that as I had thought after my order maybe I should've tried a non-HD version. Funny how things can work out!

The sticker on the brush was a bit smeared, possibly from transit. I emailed the vendor and they said they'd send a new sticker along no problems. Only problem I've had so far. Used last night for a shave and had a wonderful shave! Still some funk to get rid of, but that's okay!

I know that the Semogue brushes on the wooden handles are supposed to be getting a better coating of lacquer that is much stronger than the last. From what I was told there wasn't much problems before, but still upgrading it nonetheless.

Stinks when something like this happens, but the vendors are very good with treating their customers great for the most part. Maybe if you e-mail them you can have something worked out?

I also just got a Semogue brush with a painted handle and it was chipped on the bottom all the way through to the underlying plastic. Paint job in general looked pretty sloppy; bubbles in the paint and flow marks. The bristles seem to be fine, and I probably won't make a big deal about the brush, but if I get any others they won't have painted handles.

My 1305 came in pretty good condition. No chips like you were describing. Overall I have been happy with it. The coating on my brush is really thick. The decal was clean.

That being said, if it had showed up with the description you gave then it would be back in the box and on it's way back. The brush should have never been shipped or the packing was very poor. Either case, the negative experience could have been prevented.

I haven't had any problems with either my Semogue 2000 or my 2009 LE. All the same though, I'm sorry to hear that the 1305 you recieved was less than satisfactory.

I am the vendor in question, but I thought I would weigh in as a guy who just sees heaps of Semogue Brushes.

From my vantage point this is a rare error and the quality of the brushes I have seen are quite good on the outset. I cannot vouch for the longevity of the painted handle brushes, but all of the others I have seen have been quite good.

(This is not a CYA post. I'm just calling like I see it.)

BTW, the OP has been nothing but a gentleman with his communication and I appreciate his emails and detailed information. I should have checked it twice before I sent it out and am working to remedy the situation as quickly as I can.

I just got mine 4 days ago and it was in perfect condition. I'd be dissapointed if it was like yours so I hope the vendor is able to either exchange it for you or give you a store credit for you next purchase or something like that.

Wow! I got a 1305 just a few weeks ago and it was in pristine condition. I think you should return it and I hope the vendor will help you out.

I feel the need to add some information to this thread.
The 1305, just like all other models, is being renewed.
Late last year, Semogue developed a new lacquer, that uses better and more environmentally friendly substances, that improves the handle protection and the final finish look.
The new 1305 that are starting to be sold now are also slightly different than the old ones. If you take a closer look at the handle, the new ones are more roundish right below the knot ring.
Maybe your 1305 is one of the last batches made before the new treatment.
But even so, please take care of your Semogue's. Don't drop them.

Leon, are you able to post a picture of the older one vs. the newer one?

Mine was perfect for the most part. The sketch dye bled out a little on the initial soak but that was all.

I feel as though maybe I'm being just a little too sensitive, as most of the issues I've described aren't immediately noticeable, except for the paint chip which isn't nearly as bad as the one posted in that repair thread. Had this brush been a $9 Omega or Jaguar, I'd not have been as disheartened, but I expected more from Semoge for a brush twice as costly.

By the way, the vendor has been on top of everything just as I had expected, and don't foresee any issues with resolving this matter. I don't think this will impede my future business with them. Everything else I've received from them has been great, and they are always generous with the samples :w00t:! I only wish I could use this baby, because the knot in it is superb :crying:

Here is a picture of the Semogue with my Vulvix. (I didn't have one by itself.) I got it at the end of December.

I had problems with a Semogue 1520 painted handle. After being used 3 times the paint started cracking and peeling off. I was very disappointed and can't believe that these brushes have such quality issues as I read other similar reports, I'm not an isolated case. I ended up contacting Leon and sent the 1520 brush back for a replacement with a 620 which is the same hair but acrylic handle. After my experience, I never want to deal with a painted wood handle again. I am still waiting for my 620 replacement, so we'll see what issues that one has as I've seen reports that those are not exactly perfect either.

I don't believe that the user should paint the brushes with any clear nail polish, if that's required then the manufacturer should do it in the first place and the manufacturer should test the brushes a lot better.

As a side note, I tried to find an official website for Semogue or some direct contact info, without success.
