Semogue Pegasus Finest, thoughts?

Want to hear y’all’s thoughts on the Semogue Pegasus (c7) Finest version? I’m contemplating adding one this year.

I’ve got one of their SOC Mistura knots in the @Rudy Vey 2024 group buy brush and I’m a big fan of it!

Curious about their bigger Badger only offering? Thoughts from those that have tried it? Tried both the Mistura and Finest?

Thanks so much, I hope y’all have a great day! 😎🤙

I have SOCs in Mistura and Finest, and prefer the Finest. I also have a Galahad C3 in Finest. It is very similar to Mistura, but it starts off softer, and ends up scrubbier with more backbone than a broken in Mistura. It is basically perfect 2 band badger for me.

The Pegasus is a beautiful brush, but I don't normally go for anything so big. Some people have reported issues with the gold plating on the ring of the Pegasus, but others didn't have any problems. It isn't something I would worry about personally.

The SOC Finest is about as large as I'd want to go with a badger knot. I have a brush from another brand with a nominal 24mm badger knot that's around 26mm actual. It's so gigantic it can be difficult to control. You end up lathering half of your face all at once.

I was about to get a Pegasus C7 in Mistura and Pegasus boar brush but seeing others post their Pegasus photos I could see that the bottom end of the knot with some green tint particularly the boar one. Then reading some reviews on the C7 brush there were reports of that gold ring rusting and so I didn`t get any Pegasus brush. Maybe later on I will but for now I`ll take a rain check.

I have ten Semogues, including a Pegasus boar and a Pegasus synthetic.

The Pegasus, also known as C7, is with its 26 mm knot AFAIK Semogue’s largest brush.
Most of my Semogues have 24 mm knots, falling into Semogue’s C5 group (SOC and Torga C5).

Over the years, my preferred knot size has shrunk and I am now very comfortable with 24 mm knots.
Keep that in mind that when I say that the Pegasus is almost too big for me now.

Pegasus brushes are available in boar, finest badger, mistura, and synthetic, but the Pegasus is, because of its size, an outlier in the Semogue program.
Otherwise the brush is excellent and I have only good things to say about it.

I have never bought a Semogue that did not fully meet my expectations.

I suspect that the main reason Semogue's Mistura is so well liked is the Finest Badger component, which really drives the speed, face feel, appearance, and even to some extent, the backbone. You get to experience the way boar breaks in slowly and softens, but end up with a knot that can still dig into a hard soap and scrub your face.

With the Finest Badger, it is nearly the same. It is better right out of the box, and to me, also better when broken in, firmer, faster, but it is nearly as close to Mistura as it is to other excellent scrubby 2 band like Shavemac.

Street price of an SOC in cherry Finest is only $60.

I think the larger boar brushes can work well. The knots have more of a column or fan shape with taller loft as compared to the globe shape of most badger knots. Italian barber usually hold the brush in their palm and pinch the knot when applying lather. This lets them "steer" the brush so they control exactly where the lather goes.

I like two band badger brushes.... That's the only type of badgers I own...... I should have taken a closer look at the Pegasus Fine... For some reason, I didn't consider it when I bought the Pegasus Mistura.... I had two SOC Misturas and loved them but I like larger knots so the 24mm always felt a bit too small for me.

I haven't noticed any of the discoloration we've seen with the Pegasus boar brushes with my Mistura. It might be there and I just can't see it as the bristles are darker. I do like the handle design of the Pegasus... a bit heavier... They feel hmmm more substantial? In any event, I'm quite happy with the Mistura and hope as the boar bristles split, it doesn't get too soft. My SOC Misturas were fully broken in as I used them extensively early on... and they didn't get floppy.

Kim, great to hear from you friend! Thank you for sharing your experience with your Semogues! This thread is the first I was hearing about the discoloration, glad to hear that has not been an issue for you! Also, good to know about the handle, the handle is one of the things drawing me to it, got a preference of the pegasus handle or the SOC handle?

Awesome! Thank you for sharing your experience with me on this! I'm quite a fan of my 24mm Mistura, one of the reasons I want to try another offering from Semogue and why I'm interested in a different knot type, I don't want to have all of the same. Really appreciate hearing how the knots have matured long term for you!

That 24-26mm size seems to be my happy place! Just sold a 29mm Oumo brush, fantastic knot and quality handle, just way too big for my tastes. If it was their smaller 25mm sized knot I think I would have kept it.

How has the SOC Finest held up for you?

I have both the SOC Finest and the Mistura with the cherry handle. Absolutely love them.

Thank you Brutus for sharing your experience with me! Any specific experience with one of their Finest knots? I’ve used the 2040 silvertip in the past and it was a lather monster! Just a tad floppy for my tastes.

Thanks!

That’s an interesting thought! I’ve not gotten along the greatest with boars in the past, probably user error 🤷‍♂️ don’t shoot me all you boar fans! 😜 I thoroughly enjoy the badger brushes I’ve used though! Quite possibly the reason I get along with the Mistura knot so well!

The SOC in finest and mistura have been on my list for quite a while. Got the SOC mistura knot from Rudy, the Pegasus handle just looks so good! Maybe I’ll do the same with the finest knot if I don’t spring for the Pegasus.

How’s the SOC in finest compare to the 2-band Shavemac as far as density and backbone are concerned?

I have the Semogue TSN Final Edition in both finest and Mistura. I also have the C7 Pegasus Mistura which is the same knot as the TSN Mistura. Both of the Mistura's have a bigger bloom then the TSN finest.

From left to right TSN finest, Pegasus Mistura and TSN Mistura. I would consider the finest knot a medium density and it has a nice soft scrub and I do not find it prickly in any way shape or form. Even though its a 26.5 mm knot it is about the same size as my 24mm Shavemacs or 26mm Paladin.

The TSN Finest has a moderate backbone and splays well. I find it has a bit less backbone than its Mistura brothers.

Like @Balin says, Shavemacs seem smaller. I only have them in 22mm, and they are set way deeper than my Galahad C3. More scrub and backbone for the actual size, but it's hard to say because the loft is so different.

Rudy can't get semogue badger, but for a C5, you would crack open a $60 SOC cherry for a little less than a Shavemac. I would probably just get the Shavemac, then... actually I would get both an RV Shavemac and the Semogue SOC and not crack the Semogue, at least not before trying both.

Maybe I didn't word myself properly, but the point I was trying to get across, that even though the 26.5 Semogue Finest knot has a larger diameter it isn't any bigger than my 24mm Shavemac D01 3 Band Badger.

@Jmp63 If you like 24mm to 26mm knots it will be right in your wheel house.

My 25mm Oumo Kirin on the left is quite a bit bigger than my 26.5 Semogue Finest.
