What's new

seasonal scent observation

It occurred to me recenty that while the so-called spring/summer scents seem to work pretty well in colder weather, the fall/winter scents really don't work in the heat. Has anyone else noticed this?

Yep, I've noticed the same thing. Frags like Gucci Pour Homme, which I love, I cannot wear in the hotter months. It almost becomes cloying. I have a few like that actually.

I've found the majority of supposed "summer scents" to be deceptive in terms of seasonal compatibility. A lot of them seem to have a very synthetic, heavy soapy/fruity thing going on that feels just as cloying as the darker autumn scents would be in high heat. I remember when I was in high school, usually around June, friends would start bathing in Chrome and Tommy - with the fruity caloney elements wafting very heavily through the air. With high quality vetivers and citrus frags aside, and when it comes to the dead of summer, I don't really think anything works very well. but that's just my two cents.

I'd be interested to hear what things you're referencing. I still haven't found anything for summer.

I believe Featherweight is saying that he prefers citrus and vetiver in the summer. If that is indeed what he is saying then I would have to agree completely. I am bouncing back and forth between L'Occitane Eau de Baux and Guerlain Vetiver myself and don't find either of them too sweet, fruity or cloying. I made the mistake of wearing Czech & Speake Frankinscense & Myrrh on a really hot day this summer and it completely nauseated me after less than an hour. I also love Bay Rum (Pinaud & Dominica) and L'Occitane Verbena for a refreshing short lived blast of scent when it's hot outside :thumbup1:

Try Monsieur Balmain and/or Guerlain Vetiver, Creed Original Vetiver, and then when summer starts to wane, around early-mid September, Kouros for its Mediterranean "boldness"

Vetivers, especially Guerlain's vetiver, are very earthy but fresh, usually complimented by lemon, and wind up having a grassy, green smell.

I agree with OP's observation. I'm very eager for some cooler weather to get here so I can bust out several samples that I've accumulated since springtime.

Monsieur Balmain is one of my favorites for the summer.

I agree - Kouros is very nice in the warmer months of Fall or Spring - September, like you said, as well as April/May.

Trumper's Skye. 'Nuff said. It's about as ice cold as they come. Citrus to boot. It's a shame summer is over. I barely cracked the lid on my Skye.

On the other hand, now I can break out the spanish leather.

Out of curiosity, what were you wearing instead of Skye?

I agree that there are some frags that work best in the dead of winter, and some can stretch out into autumn and early spring. I find that I don't reach for Knize Ten or Vintage Tabarome much when I'm barbecuing!

On the other hand, I'm not sure if I'd wear my more summery stuff in cold weather. I guess that it isn't because they are unsuitable: it's because that's when I enjoy using the wintery ones.

There are, however, a few that I can use anytime. Dunhill 1934 is the first one that comes to mind. Maybe Grey Flannel too, although I wouldn't put too much on if it's hot.

I think one can quite easily wear the lighter/citrusy/vetiver summer scents in colder weather. However wearing the heavier/wintery orientals in the summer is a different story all together.

Personally, I prefer vetivery, citrusy fragrances during summers and ambery/vanillic/leathery scents during winters.
