Scuttles...why? where?

Newbie: Are scuttle actually effective or are they simply a practice in luxury? Do they actually improve the shave or is it simply for that wonderful feel of a nice warm lather?

And if you are willing to answer that questions, perhaps you can suggest one, or some place I may go to browse a few.

Much Appreciated fellas!

Anything that creates a wonderful feel does, in fact, improve the shave, and is therefore an absolute necessity! :whistling:

They are indeed simply for that wonderful feel of a nice warm lather! You need to get one!

I agree they provide a source of warm lather. The DirtyBird is an excellent way to keep the lather warm.

Is it abosolutely necessary to have an effective shave, no. But it is nice on a cold morning though.

Based on a recommendation I got I've started doing this. I have always warmed the bowl in hot water in the sink while I shower thin drained the water and made my lather. Now, I just leave the bowl sitting in the hot water - don't drain the water - and build my lather there. Try it - it's quick and easy and I think it works well enough that it will help answer your questions. I think a scuttle would work much better but I've never used one - yet. )

As soon as my hair cools it stiffens. I'm remarkably sensitive to cold (to the point of drops of cold water landing on my bare skin being painful), and cooling my skin seems to reset it to an unprepped state; drying my face and letting the air touch it for a few short seconds is sufficient to do this.

Hot lather is good. YMMV. Julie has suggested NOT filling the lower bowl with boiling water but I may wind up warming it gently with my tap water and then slowly raising the temperature close to it anyway... 180F perhaps.

Well, you've all made quite the case....thanks.

I just heat my bowl in really really hot (I can't touch it) water during shower...but I assume it cools off while I lather...especially later on.

Once you go to a scuttle you won't go back!!! I tried one a while ago and as it was borrowed, had to return it... :mad3:

Now my scuttle purchase is on hold, pending approval from SWMBO

Warm lather is nice, but you don't need a scuttle for that. As some people pointed out, you can just keep your bowl/mug in the sink filled with hot water, or use a bigger bowl filled with hot water (which is essentially what a scuttle is). Scuttle simply makes it easier and also looks great. I've read all the reviews and although the three most common scuttles mentioned here are fantastic, I wasn't sure I am ready to spend that much especially since I already broke one shaving bowl and I knew that sooner or later the same thing may happen to my new expensive scuttle. So, I ended up buying one from a seller "rbecker13" on eBay. The one I bought is this one:

Although it may be not as nice as the Moss Scuttle or others mentioned (I have no other scuttle to compare it to) for me personally it looks, works, and costs just right. It arrived quickly and I love the simple black color; although the seller offers other colors as well. I use it daily and it works great. Keep in mind, that lather tend to "melt" in hot container so you have to whip it up a few times during the shave.

Disclaimer: I have no associations with the seller above. I am posting this based on my experience with his product.

I just ordered a scuttle from rbecker13 as well. It didn't arrive yet, but I expect it this week. Robert offers three styles/sizes I believe, I got the smaller size:

I am glad to hear it Y2K likes his. This scuttle was more in my price range than the others, although the "big 3" all seemed to be well loved by their owners. When I was doing my research I bookmarked these sites that might be of interest:

DB (Dirty Bird)

Georgetown

Moss Scuttle

Robert Becker

Happy shopping!

Scuttles will keep the brush/lather much warmer than placing it in a bowl in a sink of warm water. Recommended.

Here's a cheap way to go, and it works almost as well as an artisan/potter produced scuttle.

BroJohn.....I bowl-lather - will that setup you linked to work for that?

I don't think it's large enough for making lather --I use it for 'parking' the brush when I face lather. It's big enough to park any size brush, though. I have several 28mm~32mm brushes, and it keeps them toasty warm. :w00t:

This is the best way to find out if you'll like a scuttle. I did this for several months before I got mine.
