Scuttle Destroying Lather

As it's gotten cooler, I started using my Moss Scuttle. I really enjoy it but when I put the lather into the scuttle, after about a minute the heat destroys the bubbles in the lather, and I'm left with very little lather and a lot of dry crust around the scuttle. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

There are lots of soaps/lather that don't hold up well in a hot scuttle. I've never had any luck with the melt-and-pour soaps in the scuttle so I use them in the warmer months when I don't put any hot water in the scuttle. You need to add more water than usual to your lather as the scuttle temp goes up - but don't go too far or you get soup. Tabac, Speick, PSGT, IK all do well and I'm sure others can add many more to the list.

I think you're right. I had one for close to a year, but stopped using it the beginning of this month. I miss the warmth, but I'm getting better lather and shaves using a $4 bowl from Target. I will probably go back to using the scuttle eventually, but I'll try using hot tap water instead of heating the water to see if that helps.

If you create a denser less airy lather it will hold up better and also provide a better shave.

I use a Robert Becker scuttle every day and use hot tap water. I agree with the others that say that perhaps you are using water that is too hot. I very much enjoy warm lather, especially in the winter so I would try experimenting with water temperature or increasing the amount of product to sustain the lather.

Doug

Maybe you are using your Moss for the wrong thing. I make lather in a warm bowl, lather up, then park the brush in a very hot Moss. Before pass number 2, I swirl the hot brush in the bowl to pick up more foam, then spread it on my face. This really works well, but it's a recipe for WARM lather, not HOT. Hot lather is a myth, a product of wishful thinking and the anonymous unverifiability of the internet. Sort of like BBS.

I face lather using a brush scuttle to hold my brush between passes. When I first got it, I had much the same experience with lather on the brush sort of dying. The remedy for me was twofold: 1) A little cooler starting temperature for the water (I use a candy thermometer to check it), and 2) work the brush on my face again on at least the 2nd pass if not the 3rd.

Lower temp water doesn't destroy the lather as much and working it on the face (or in your case, in the bowl) allows it to build back up to appropriate consistency.

I think the optimum solution for you will evolve through experimentation. If you want warm lather, keep the water hot. Mix in more soap if you need a denser lather or mix in a little water if it is drying out.

The fun part of this old-time shaving to me is finding out what works best and discovering how to get better results through trial and error.

put a thermometer in your scuttles water spout I wait till I cools below 160 before making lather just find what temperature works for you

Your title made me think your lather was somehow destroying your scuttle. Then I started wondering what it was doing to your face.

Thanks, Guys. This is all very helpful. I'm putting hot water out of my hot pot, so I'm sure that's culprit #1. I'll mess around and see what happens.
