I wanna get a scuttle. Ability to bowl lather in the scuttle itself is a must. This got the Moss scuttle rejected. So now I'm looking at Dirty Bird and Georgetown. But reviews are very mixed. Some will say one holds heat better, then another will give the heat retention win to the other. Some even say that neither retains heat well. What to do, what to do ? Does anyone have a more definitive answer ?

Some creams can get broken down by the heat..soaps work much better
I find that the heat retention variables are not that important because the shave is over before there's significant cool down. What I like about the Georgetown scuttle is the stopper and the finish (it's from a mould not hand turned) . You may not think the stopper is all that important until you go to make lather and you have water splashing around everywhere. Plus, this way you can pour hot water into both areas and pour out the water your brush was sitting in without loosing the hot water in the inner bowl...very handy.

Good point I was wondering how was the water in the bottom gonna behave when I picked up the scuttle and started shaking to make lather.
I agree 100%! I have owned the Large Robert Becker scuttle, Large Moss scuttle, the Dirty Bird 1.5 and the Georgetown G-5 and the only ones remaining are my G-5 and my Georgetown brush scuttle. They all retain heat well, although the G-5 holds less water so heat retention time is slightly reduced, not enough to matter though. You might look into the new Georgetown scuttle, the G-20. It holds more water and still looks great. You can't go wrong with any of them but since you bowl lather too, the DB 1.5, Georgetown G-5, or the G-20 would all be great choices. Robert Becker also makes a decent scuttle and for less money. They aren't as visually appealing to me but they do get the job done. Good luck in your scuttle hunt!
i've owned both the G5 and DB1.5, here are my thoughts.
the DB is built better, holds more water is a superior bowl lathering scuttle. it's heavy and sits on my counter when lathering, no picking up necessary, no water get spilled. large spout makes it easy to clean and fill.
the G5 is molded, holds less water and is a more versatile scuttle. can be used as a brush scuttle as well as bowl. but when bowl lathering, it does better with a long handled brush, as it's quite deep. stopper was annoying, always popped out, so i fixed that with using a wood cork, which worked 1000X better. an ok bowl scuttle and a good brush scuttle
of the 2, the DB1.5 remains. both are great scuttles and where the G5 shines is it's versatility to act as a very good brush scuttle and a decent bowl scuttle. the DB is built like a tank and is customizable (initials, swirls, handle etc) and Julie is an amazing and accommodating potter to work with and her pieces are one of a kind, as they are all hand made.

I agree with this post about the shaving quality of the G-5 scuttle. What sealed the deal for me was when i took it out of the box, SWMBO said it was very nice looking and acceptable for 'her" bathroom. It doesn't get any better than that!

Perfectly put. Before I let my G5 go, I also had issues with the rubber stopper staying put. Bruce seems to have fixed this, by choosing a cork instead of a stopper.
I have no regrets on purchasing my 1.5 DB. And I'm sorry...but the name "dirty bird" gets extra points.
I would go with either the new georgetown G20, or the schwarzweisskeramik scuttle.

People, your comments are making me seriously think about the DB. So now how to choose between standard and 1.5 ? I have a medium size brush, does that affect the decision ? Is the extra amount of water capacity significantly useful ?
Like my previous comment said, I wanna know if I'm getting a huge monster if I go with the 1.5. Don't want something that looks abnormally large.

The 1.5 is a good size scuttle. The original size is more that enough for most people and most brush sizes. The 1.5 offers more wiggle room so to speak for lathering and it will accomodate any brush size all the way up to the monster sizes. For what it's worth, I can comfortably lather a Chubby 3 in my G-5, so a big brush doesn't always justify a huge scuttle.

You won't regret it! As far as heat retention, I can only speak for the 1.5. After a 10-15 minute prep/shave, the water was still very warm when I emptied out the scuttle. Heat retention in Julie's scuttles is not even a question, they keep your lather as toasty as you prefer. Of course there is a such thing as too hot, your lather will literally break down. Your brush should be fine in either size scuttle.

I bought a Robert Becker scuttle a few weeks ago that he happened to have already made and at around $30 shipped, it's one of the best purchases I can remember. I fill it and then place it in the microwave for 4 minutes while I take a shower. It turns the proraso soap on my brush into a bowl of hot lather quickly. Outstanding!
