SCS citrus burning?

So, I have samples of SCS Extract of Limes and Bay Rum w/ a Twist aftershaves, and holy crap do they burn. Not like a nice alcohol burn, but like an allergic burn. My first thought was that I might be quasi-allergic to the citrus, since I know they don't contain alcohol. However, no other citrus aftershave has done this to me. I remember a thread a while ago talking about citrus burns, but I don't recall if SCS's products were singled out as containing anything especially "volatile".

Does this happen to anyone else? Any observations? It's a shame these things are actually uncomfortably painful to use, because they work great (as does the Oakmoss Lavendula, probably my fave of the SCS aftershaves...and holy crap, buy their soaps)...I'm just not sure I'm masochistic enough to keep using something that makes me want to cry more than having a nose hair plucked :scared:.

That being said, if someone's interested in trading some samples, hit me up with a PM. Otherwise these will be coming to a PIF forum near you.

SCS Bay Rum with a Twist and Mediterranean Citrus both leave me mildly uncomfortable. That's why it's nice that they're available in (generous) sample sizes.

Wow, it must be a skin reaction of some sort if you've used other alcohol splashes. I was disappointed in not having it burn enough:lol: but the effect made it worthy. I hope you find yourself something else to enjoy:001_smile

The Splashes do have alcohol in them. What were you using before?

Sorry, I guess off the bat I should've been more clear that I'm using the milks.

I'm not 100% on what you mean by what I was using before, but I've used everything from Old Spice, Osage, and an Adidas splash I've had since high school to a couple other of SCS' offerings (Savory Rose and Oakmoss Lavendula) to Nivea Sensitive to L'Occitane's L'Occitan balm. And all the T&H balms. Nothing has burned in the same way as these two citrus aftershaves.

Is your skin sensitive? If so, the citrus scents could definitely be irritating. If other SCS milks are working for you, you've likely found the culprit.

I use the Lime milk almost every day. Used it this morning. I don't experience any burn at all. In fact, I find it very soothing.

I suppose you could determine if it's the citrus by squeezing out some lime and rubbing just a bit on one small spot on your face after shaving? Maybe not the lime juice but a bit of the oil from the lime peel.

If I'm squeezing limes out for cooking, I will wipe my hands on my neck and face rather then washing them off.

Just a suggestion.

As an aside, I have the Barclay Crocker AS Balm with Bay Rum in it, and it has "hot pepper" type of burn to it (for me). Starts out nice then develops a pretty good alcohol type of burn then tapers off. I like the way it smells and leaves my skin, but that burn...

I'll have to give that a try. And "hot pepper" burn is a great way to describe the pain. Hadn't thought of that before.
