Screw Store Meat!

Man, found a local farmer who sells beef and I must say, I have only tasted beef like this in high end restaurants! If you haven't had any, go find someone who sells it straight off the cow (grass fed of course). You won't be disappointed!

I had to share... I am so excited about it! We scored 600lbs! (No it's not all for me, we send some off to family in other parts of the country and we share with neighbors)

actually, a 2 week hang time will make your pic taste better :tongue_sm

Meh, it's an illustration.
Simply meant to infer that off the hoof and out of the butcher paper is better than off the truck and out of the cellophane and styrofoam tray!

 Out here, we have "Food Lion" supermarkets. Never heard of them till I moved to the Carolinas but, the beef is TERRIBLE. It's actually the whole state! I don't know what it is but, we've even tried the "high end" supermarkets and the beef just tastes funny to me.

Never heard it called the Screw Store before.

Maybe they're using clown cows.

man, Phil! that's gotta be better than black angus,, and probably twice as good as Kobe!

do you know where we can get some stock of that? :biggrin1:

Here we have a smallish chain- K&J House of Meats. Fairly inexpensive, compared to the big stores, but excellent quality. They can sling out a chunk of porterhouse the likes of which you see nowhere else.

This sounds funny when I hear city people say that. I grew up on the farm so until I moved into the city I thought it was all good quality. Guess not

I grew up in the South and worked on a farm a couple of summers but, we always bought meat from the store. I guess it just depends which states you're in and which part of said state?

I just got lucky that my co-worker grew up on a cattle farm and that his parents still sold beef, otherwise I would have never really thought of it. I was looking for a butcher shop but, didn't think to see if there were any cattle farmers around.

Next up! Vegetables!

My sister has a garden that I will be raiding and there's always the Farmer's Market :)

I don't eat that much beef, so 600 lbs would last a bizillion years, but I agree with avoiding store meat. I am fortunate enough to have a real butcher in my town. They age both choice and prime. Everything is terrific and the taste outstanding and I enjoy the banter with my friends behind the counter. Thinking of actually investing in a filet tonight. I despise buying food in cellophane.

I agree. It makes a huge huge huge difference.
I had some of the best steaks, meatloaf and burgers I've ever had from beef that I bought from a small butcher shop that stocked local, fresh meat.

i grew up on a hog farm, and we always raised 1 beef a year to split between my dad and uncle (owned farm together). probably 10-15 years ago, my dad started to acquire meat processing equipment and increasing the amount of beef he processed. now, i think he's up to 70-75 a year. they're selling the hog farm, and he is sticking with the beef.

i grew up on this stuff, and was quite spoiled by it. when i moved out in my early 20's, i had a rude awakening the first time i bought hamburger at the store. it was horrible! tough, greasy, no flavor.

i noticed that when cooking 4 patties on a forman grill, the little grease cup would fill up about half way. when cooking 4 patties of ground chuck from the store, it would fill up twice!

you'd be surprised how much water hamburger can absorb; AND how much water the government allows to be added!

but fresh, buy local!
