What's new

Scored a first year Single Ring

Picked up this early Single ring today
The slide clasp case is in pretty good condition although it is worn on the corners.
The razor is in great condition with no cracks in the handle.
It does have a heavy patina that is almost black. It will clean up like new but I am wondering if I should or not...opinions?
I know some of these early single rings came with metal blade boxes but I do not know if this one belongs with this case as it has the diamond logo.

It came with 2 old blades 635 and 641 which date to 1916, I like the wrappers with the patent dates

Wow - nice acquisition!! The printing on that ribbon is so perfect. The razor is not bad either :biggrin1:. Amazing for a piece that is over 100 years old.

That'll clean up just fine using the baking soda method. Great score.. It's a beaut!!!
I found an 1908 Single Ring and cleaned it up and shaved with it.. It's the razor I'm most proud of, It's a real kick to shave with a piece of 100 year old history!!

Very nice! Looks like there's no brassing on the razor, no worn plating; just lot of patina that will clean up nicely with the baking soda / aluminum foil method. The case interior also looks very good, great score!

Sweet razor! I'm a bit of an odd duck, but I'd leave the patina on it. I cleaned a SR up with the baking soda/tin foil method, and it works great. But I found afterwards I regretted it. And once it's gone it's gone. But as I said, I'm a little different!

One person's patina is another person's dirt.

Mine cleaned up very nicely and I love the look of silver compared to nickel.

Very nice find. I also vote for tarnish removal via baking soda/aluminum foil.

That blade case is not correct. The correct ones are the cardboard holders. This is my 1906 serial #731959:

You're right that that's what would have come with the set originally. However, when Gillette put their "New Process" blades out in 1908 they came packaged in those match-strike cases. So my guess is that a fair number of people who'd bought sets with the cardboard sleeves eventually just pitched them in favor of the metal cases that they got when they bought new blades.
