What's new

Score? 1919 Gillette Bulldog! Need advice and opinions.

Hello all!
I'm new to the world of DE shaving, but I think I've officially got RAD. This is my third razor, and I'm really happy with it. I believe it's a 1919 Gillette Bulldog. Purchased for $15. The serial number reads "K328274." The razor is black with tarnish on one side and has a great portion of the finish removed. I don't currently have the razor in my possession (my sister picked it up for me at a flea market), but I will have it in a few weeks to give it a proper cleaning (Water, Baking Soda, Aluminum foil method). Therefore I only have a few photos and I know they're not the best. I'll do my best to answer any questions that are asked, but I can't guarantee I'll be able to answer them without having the razor in front of me.

My questions are as follows:

How'd I do? Good price? Bad price? Fair price?

Opinions on the razor in general?

If I can save up the funds, should I get it replated? If so, what should I replate it with? If not, why not?

EDIT: What if I were to just replate the top portion? Would it be too obvious? Is it not worth it? What do people recommend in that situation?

Thanks!

Great razor and a very good price.

Like you said, the plating is worn, especially on the head. The dark stuff will come off with the baking soda method or a light polish. Where you see brass coming through is what it is.

I would leave well enough alone with the plating and just shave, but I'm not really into replating. YMMV.

Excellent price, never used that particular razor. As for plating, I'd avoid it, for me it removes too much of the history.

A very nice razor, this design was made for the Chief of the Company, he wanted a beefy stocky bulldog handle, he said the weihgt made the shave better. Theyy came in triple silver plated, gold plated and silver or nickel plated for the 1917-1918 military sets.

Oh that is really nice. I need a 1917 Bulldog. That would be my dad's birthyear razor. Then I could stop buying razors, yeah that's it, I could stop.

Thanks for the info/advice everyone! And whavens, if I happen across a 1917 Bulldog, I'll be sure to let you know.
