Schick Krona

Found one on the bay fairly reasonable and loaded it up with an american personna-yuck, very grabby. Then put in a Crystal and wow! I think I found my go to combo. I have a very tough beard and usually destroy a blade within 2 shaves but the Crystals have been great. However I unfortunately got one of the later Kronas with the very slight blade alignment problem. Requires a an extra bit of attention when loading a blade, other than that really good and recommended as a mild shaver.:devil2:

One of my favorite razors and a part of my rotation. Just think of the blade alignment difference as an extra feature. Slightly more aggressive on one side than the other :wink2:.

I use Crystals also but my preferred blade in the Krona is a yellow 7 O'Clock.

I received a nice Krona from our very own Topgumby and, paired with a Shark, it's been giving me some of my best shaves ever.

I hadn't heard about blade-alignment problems with the later models. I must have been using early models since I never experienced that. Anyone have specific info on when the "problems" started?

It seems to have been a problem with some of the later models that have the plastic TTO knob. I have a plastic knobbed version that has a very slight blade alignment problem (more blade protruding on one side than the other). It is marked "Schick" on the silo doors. On the underside there is the number 3 in two of the corners and the letter M in a third. I also have one of the earlier models with the metal TTO knob and no marking on the doors. There is no alignment problem with that one.

I actually prefer the balance of the all plastic Krona and have never noticed a problem shaving with it in spite of the alignment.

I prefer the plastic-tipped, too. I see NOS packaged models on eBay every so often from 1970 and 1972 and wonder if those were "safe" years. Sometimes a seller will list the code because that's all the ID there is. There's one up for auction now, "M843," but whether that makes it more or less likely to have the alignment problem, I don't know.

I have both, but I do not believe I have ever used the plastic TTO one.

I like the metal knob version, preferably loaded with a Feather - outstanding and very forgiving but not overly mild.

Krona porn, anyone?

Not so much a blade alignment issue as a construction issue. The metal knobbed Kronas have a different construction and thicker center post than the later plastic-knobbed models, with the result that there is little slop or side to side movement when you drop the blade in. Later models allow for more side to side movement due to different construction, which may possibly result in misalignment, but in my opinion it rarely happens. All the plastic models share this construction, BTW. I do not consider it an issue.

I''m in the middle of putting together a short post on the Krona (with lots of pix) which will reveal all the subtle differences between the various models, but can't seem to find the time to finish. It is the only razor I will shave with, and I pretty much have every model made save one. Paired with any NOS Schick blade the results are always outstanding. Personna blades are another excellent choice as far as pairings go.
