What's new

Scariest Movies:

I like the idea of watching either a marathon or one every night for the month of Oct in prep for Halloween. The two that I usually watch are The Exorcist and The Shining.

What are your favorites?

maybe not the traditional slice and dice but I really liked Alien. I find the best scary movies that work with tension and less gore.

I second with bear and would also like to throw the ORIGINAL Amityville Horror. The new one was just plain garbage :thumbdown

The two you listed.

You know what movie scared me most as a child? Ernest Scared Stupid. The trolls in that movie scared the bejesus out of me. I would look underneath my bed all night. That and Candyman.

Where's Siburning to weigh in on this one?

Nothing gets to me too much now a days:001_rolle. The one movie who wrecked me for a few years was Nightmare On Elm Street

I agree. The best horror movies leave things up to the viewer's imagination.

I was going to say that one too. The original NOES was quite scary. All of the sequels and the subsequent remake were awful.

I'm probably in the minority, but "Paranormal Activity" scared the bejeepers out of me.

Also, any recent Japanese horror movie. The Japanese horror directors have the scary thing down pat!

I don't get into scary movies but my wife does. We watched Paranormal Activity and it was possibly the dumbest movie I've ever seen. Especially the ending. The ending was horrible.

But, YMMV of course. :thumbup1:

I about fell out of my seat laughing when the guy got thrown up the stairs into the camera. It almost made up for the rest of the "movie". Almost. :thumbdown

All excellent suggestions given thus far.

I would like to add: Dawn of The Dead. The 2004 remake. Just a really fun kick-*** movie!

Also three movies that I haven't seen much talk about on these boards:

Prince of Darkness - classic 80s horror cheese, but it is a john carpenter flick and has Alice Cooper in it!
13 Tzameti - more film noire; a really disturbingly creepy French black and white flick - definitely worth a look.
Uzumaki (The Spiral) - if you like Japanese horror, you definitely should appreciate this relatively unknown gem.

As a kid though, I have to say the three movies that really scared me (serious nightmares) were: Alien, Aliens and the Shining.

I was totally into horror movies as a kid/teenager and many scared me alot, especially Friday the 13th, Poltergeist, Jaws, and that last scene of Carrie.
Now that I'm almost 40 none of them get to me, it just doesn't work for me anymore no matter what they do in the movie. I usually find the drive to the theater and sometimes the people watching the movie to be more scary than anything on the film. :biggrin1:

Alien is a great suggestion! I have never seen Nightmare on Elm Street so I will have to check that one out.
Another one that can make you think is Frailty. Horror movies tend to be cheesy a lot of the time.

As a kid growing up one of my favorite TV shows was Rod Serling's Twilight Zone. Not necessarily gore or goblins, mainly a lot of thinking "outside" the box.

I may see if you can buy the old TZ's. They would work really well for nightly viewing.

Still looking for more suggestions.
