Scariest / most disturbing video games

Just wondered what games are at the top of everyone's "It freaked me the [ ] out!" list. I'll have to start with the original Silent Hill - the atmosphere that game creates still has the power to make me feel queasy, I don't think any other game has given me chills quite like that one

The only game that ever freaked me out was the original Parasite Eve on PS1. Not sure if the game was that scary or just that I was young but I still remember how scary I thought it was.

I seem to remember Myst, of all things, creeping me out. I wouldn't say it was scary or disturbing, but it was mysterious and the world was so desolate.

I don't get SCARED very easily, but I jump easily. I jumped a lot from the first two Resident Evil films. I loved Silent Hill 2. I haven't played video games in forever, but they sort of killed that franchise, didn't they?

I was really surprised at the horror elements in Stalker, I keep meaning to check out the sequels. Yeah I think the Resident Evil franchise pretty much died after Nemesis - it strayed too far from the horror and more towards action. Dead Space 1 & 2 are great alternatives though

forever silent hill - the original. just damn creepy.
on a psychological level, Max Payne 1. The baby crying scene. ARGH!!!! creeped my mind the hell out.

What creeps me out is that there are people out there, free, wasting their minds away on such tripe, when they could be in Margaritaville,

It all went wrong after Pong

Resident Evil 2 startled me a few times.

Manhunt for the PS2 disturbed me, and I wanted to like it when I first bought it.

Silent hill was the only game to give me the heebies. I bought it on PS1? when it came out, and only played it late at night, since I was on weird hours at work. Eventually I just thought it would be better for my blood pressure to put it away.

You really need to play Amnesia: The Dark Descent. All others mentioned here have nothing on it in the genre of freaky games.

That reminds me, I started playing Penumbra: Overture a while ago but for some reason put it down, I'll have to carry on and get hold of Amnesia as I've heard a few people say it's one of the best in the horror genre.

I'm with you on that, Legion, I think Silent Hill was the only game I ever traded in and re-bought a few times because I got to points that just freaked me out too much (I was pretty young at the time)

I'm not greatly familiar with many video games, but I got a couple of jumps out of the seat from Dead Space 1 and thought it was great at maintaining tension during gameplay. I also remember the first Halo when the swarm (I think that's it) were first introduced. I think they did a good job of creating a great creep factor with the way they were introduced and with that creepy music, but it's an action game. When I play, it's late at night in the dark, so that adds to the environment. Oh, someone mentioned the original Parasite Eve... agree with the creepiness in that one :)

First one that came to mind was definitely Silent Hill. The first time I played the original Resident Evil freaked me out too. It took me a week to play it again after watching the first zombie eat that corpse after the dining hall.
