Savile Row 3824

Hi All,

I decided to spoil myself and purchase a Savile Row 3824. I was disappointed to visit QED only to find out they didn't ship internationally :crying: I got in touch with Charles and he was extremely helpful, needless to say I had my SR3824 in less than 10 days. (As a side note: Charles at QED customer service is second to none)

Using ambrose method, I broke in my brush which worked a treat. For the last two mornings I've used it, with SMN and Castle Forbes Lime, and its wonderful. Its a lather machine, a bit thirsty, but once you realize this and get the water ratio its truly a delight. It's the softest brush going around.

I have previously used a Rooney 2/1 in super. Its a great brush, super dense, and soft, but the SR3824, while not quite as dense, in the short time I've had it, surpasses it.

I couldn't resist the urge to share, but it has also left me feeling slightly conflicted. I'm getting jittery, if the SR3824, surpassed my Rooney, I'm curious to find out what could surpass SR3824? Could this be SBAD about to kick in? If it is, god help me and my bank balance...

I purchased a SR3722 off the B/S/T/ recently. It is an outstanding brush, and I have quite a few. You could look for a long time to find a brush to rival an SR, imho. Congrats on going 1st class from the start.:thumbup1: Bradley

+1 to Charles at QED, great guy

Also, you really did not need to break in that 3824.
If I recall correctly, the reason Ambrose used that method was because his brush was stiff and scrubby to the point of being uncomfortable when he received it.
The Savile Row Silvertips are cloud-soft!

Glad you like your new brush!
As to what could surpass it, you'll never know until you try them all!
*evil laugh* HA HA HA HA HA HA HA  *evil laugh*

Seriously though  I recommend you try a custom Shavemac in D01. That brush was the only reason I eventually sold my Savile Rows.

I've done a search but haven't found the Ambrose thread regarding how to break in a brush.

I too have a 3824 that I'm currently trying to sell on the BST. I agree with you about the softness and the great quality of the brush. However I discovered I'm not a fan of the bulb shape knot. I am now in the process of finding a brush with the same charactoristics as the 3824 with more of a fan shape.

I wonder if Charles (QED) ever though of selling these brushes set with a fan shape knot. I'm sure they would sell great for him.

I would recommending contacting Bernd at Shavemac and having him make you a custom shortened loft Silvertip with a fan shaped knot. Should be about the same price as a new 3824.

Really? I hope I didn't damage the brush doing it?

You're killing me....SBAd is about to kick in I have to try them all.........:biggrin1:

What's custom about the Shavemac? Do you have any recommendations? I'm really digging myself a hole asking these questions...

You could cure SBAD by getting a Rooney Heritage, but what's the fun in that? :tongue_sm Shave cave will remain incomplete with out a custom Shavemac, but I recommend not getting one until you've tried a few brushes and know exactly what you want.

Thanks Vlad. So that's another vote for buying more brushes until I become a brush conaseuir before embarking on a custom Shavemac.

I might have to give my bank manager a heads up..

Shavemac is one of the few companies that will assemble a custom brush to your specifications (knot size, loft, shape, hair type, handle design, handle material, etc). This way, you can design your perfect brush from the ground up. Incidentally, Shavemac supplies the knots for the Savile Row silvertips, so if you like your SR, you'll enjoy the Shavemac just as much (or more since it's to your specs!).

Thanks for the link. Shavemac D01 is the softest, most dense knot I've ever put to my face. Bernd is awesome to work with and makes the process effortless. I highly recommend Shavemac and would suggest a Custom D01. I too think you should wait till you know the exact specs you want for you're brush. And the best part about it..... you have to buy/try new brushes. It's great isn't it. And someone said this was cheaper than cartridges. I guess it could be if I wasn't the way I am. O-well it's all good.

The 3824 is a fantastic brush. I love mine, and it's excellent with both soaps and creams. :whistling:

Ordinarily I would put a +1 and agree -- but I'd change the word from fantastic to phenomenal and maybe add extraordinary also!!! I love this brush and as the OP said the service from Charles/QED is top notch!

Don't worry about it, you didn't do anything that a more than a week or two of lathering would have eventually done. I just said that because usually the reason people want to break in their brushes quicker is because they might be too scritchy or scrubby, both of which will be slightly lessened by a few weeks of lathering.

Oh god, what isn't custom about it???
You can pick any handle, and specify the type of hair, knot size, knot shape, and loft height.
That's my favorite part about Shavemac, and one of the reasons they are maybe my favorite brushmaker.
I would recommend D01 or 2-band D01 with a 22-24mm knot and a 46-48mm loft.

Not true, at least according to Charles over at QED.

Thanks for that mate!! I now having a starting point for the Shavemac. I'm also relieved I didn't damage the SR3824 breaking it in. :thumbup1:

I have also heard Shavemac is not the supplier QED uses. If I was a bettin' man I would say Thater supplies Charles for his Savile Row brushes.

I was curious about this because I love my SR3722. The tips are very soft and it has great backbone/stiffness. I bought a Shavemac D01 and it was very soft but had no backbone. When it was dry, it felt a little stiffer than my SR3722, but as soon as water hit it, it was a mop. It lathered very well, but it just wasn't for me.

More fuel for the Savile Row/Shavemac fire:

Check out SR's top-tier silvertips, particularly the 3722 and 3824 (at the bottom here). Boy howdy, those handles look familiar. I can overlook hair similarities... but it gets curious when they coincide with handle shapes that you only find via two vendors.

Same goes for Thater/Shavemac. I've yet to see a Thater that wasn't sporting a handle readily available with Shavemac stamped on it. I don't mean "similar" I mean "indistinguishable". I'm not trying to blow any whistles or cry foul - it's common practice in this market and in others. I just think it's hard to say it ain't true.
