Sandpapers to remove scratches and laser etching by hand?

Hi all,

I would like to remove the "Gold Dollar of Classic Quality" laser etching (and some scratches) from my mini GD W58... by hand with sandpaper followed by polish. No power tools available.

Would you recommend which grit to start and finish with, and which grits to use in between, please? And anything else I might need to know of course.

I'd start with 150 backed by a piece of washing machine supply hose. Then 220, 320, 400, 600, 1000.......... then polish. The ......... is there suggesting 1500, and 2000 and even finer lapping papers if you care to go that high.
