Sally's Beauty Supply

I saw a reference to this place on the forum so decided to check out my local one. Anyone been there? I was curious what shaving supplies they had but also wanted to find a decent pocket comb (what happened to the good ones that used to be everywhere) and see if they had any interesting pomades.

Here are some items that might be of interest if you have one local:

* Large bottle of Pinaud Clubman AS for about the same price as the regular bottle at the drug store - just under $7.
* Large bottle of Master's Bay Rum. About $10. No other Master's selections unfortunately.
* The large-ish green container of Pinaud talc (not the white container shaving talc) for $3.29 on sale.
* 3 different talc application brushes which were all decent (one horse hair).
* More Pinaud "stuff" than I had ever seen. The hair gel, mustache wax, styptic pen. Does it smell good while it torments you?

Fails or otherwise non-interesting:

* Combs - all plastic, brittle garbage (what seems to be the norm anyway). Anything slightly passable had a "Sally's girls" logo on it. Pass.
* Pomades - usual selection. Only had Murray's Superior but not the lite stuff. Nothing unusual.
* Shaving brush - only 1 - a hog - very small and soft bristles - not as good as the VDH or similar at Target.

I meant to ask if they had some variation of Barbicide but it slipped my mind.

Matt

They do indeed have barbicide and containers. I purchased some just last week at my local one here in Kansas City.

I have never been excited by anything I have found in Sally's. I asked an employee at one if they had shaving stuff and all she showed me was a removable-blade straight.

As far as the combs, I inherited a box of some unused combs from a gentleman who used to shoot school photos. If you're interested PM me. $BlueComb-090912_2320.jpg

Yep, that's where I get my clubman and masters, can't beat the price and quantity! also if you sign up for their card ($5.00) you will get another $1.00 off of those product, plus when you sign up, you get a $5.00 off coupon on a purchase of $10.00 or more, so you get your card fee back basically, other than the products you mentioned, not much else for me there, glad I have a daughter!!! also they have barber shears and some interesting things to look at. The prices and quantities of the shave products make this a worthwhile stop if your interested, and the large clubman and bay rumm bottles look real cool on my bathroom counter, barbershop style!$2012-09-09_16-07-20_757.jpg

Another cool thing they have there is the little "key" that you use to roll up a metal tube, like the ones for CO Bigelow/Proraso. It's in the section for hair color.

I can't believe I just typed that...

They are always EXTREMELY rude to me at the local store. Hate it there. They act like I'm a child. Horrible selection, too.

+1. They do have some decent things and when you find discount codes, I like to shove it in their faces. You can complain. Sally's is big on customer satisfaction. My brother was a regional manager for them for years and the company was good to their managers. My brother once won a all expense-paid trip to Cancun which he took me along with.
Oh yeah, some carry the Ming-Shi butterfly razor which isn't too bad considering it's a DE that gets the job done and you can find at a local store.

They have that DE at mine, too. Plus some decent blades. I actually have complained, and even took a picture of one of my issues I had (the way they had a whole sectioned blocked off and I need to move stuff to get to it) and they never really said much about it. I'd rather pay shipping than go there!

I picked up my last bottle of Barbicide at the local Sally's

The one here has a very limited stock of barber products outside of clippers and other such "big ticket" items.

How big are the Sally's stores that you guys are going to? There's one in the shopping center that I do my grocery shopping at, but it's tiny. I was going to stop in this weekend, but there were three or four people in there and it looked uncomfortably crowded. The store is so small that I seriously doubt they'd have any decent shaving stuff.

Not huge, but decent sized. Imagine your average convenience store.

Hey Zack! I think the problem may be that they use way to small of retail space for their locations, the one here is tight as well, and they have those old mirrors on the ceiling so they can see what's going on, I had to go get the salesperson when I wanted to check out, but they have been very nice and helpful, but this is Oregon, (not to put down other regions) and we are over courteous here, let other drivers merge in etc. everywhere I have visited including Peru, driving is a bloodsport!

Do NOT buy that brush. I bought one there and it is the worst *** I've ever seen. The bristles are too short and cut, and the handle is hollow plastic. IMO Sally's is not worth bothering with.

I've seen that there. It felt still (I poked through the package).

Thanks for the tip, I have been looking for one of those gizmos and never found them.

There are a dozen of them within a twenty minute drive, they claim. The closest one is small, and if they have either Barbicide or the (what the heck is its real name?) "jar" you mix it in, I didn't see either one (and the only men's products of any kind were aimed at African-American men). There's another almost as close as that one, I may some day find, if I need something (like Barbicide) that I decide I want.

At our store the barbicide / Hydrocide is on the opposite side of the isle with the men's "African-American men" stuff.
I bought one of the Magic shavette razors in store and keep that thing in my dopp bag. It is a cheap made piece of junk but shaves like a dream, IMO. Just great for traveling, I mean who cares if I lose a $10.00 razor, right, YKWIM.
- like this one - http://www.sallybeauty.com/Magic-Razor/SBS-730700,default,pd.html?cm_vc=SEARCH
The last time I stopped by Sally's they even had a cheapo DE TTO razor...I was a bit surprised by that...although It looked really cheaply made.
- I think this is the same one ? http://www.sallybeauty.com/safety-razor/SBS-676100,default,pd.html?cm_vc=SEARCH

They have Derby and Persona DE blades as well.....
I got my vintage barber's barbicide jar with all the pieces at an antique store for a nice price after about 10 minutes of haggling.
I see them all the time now in the junk stores....usually they want a lot more than they will except for them......

The Sally's in my area isn't interested in catering to needs of men. I asked them to order aftershave and I'd pay the extra fee and they told me no. I did find talc and Personna DE blades. The blades I bought read 5 on the package and they only contained 3. Not too happy about my dealings with Sally's.

My best luck finding the old school shaving stuff was at Korean haircare supply stores that service the black community. (my wife is black) I find all kinds of great deals on Clubman or whatever, large bottle for cheap.
