What's new

Safety Razor Acquisition Thread.

I don't know if this can be considered a new acquisition but here go's. I'm relatively new to DE shaving(I've wet shaved since I was 16)having acquired an EJ86 a few months back. After a conversation about traditional razors with my father he pointed me to a box in his attic telling me I was welcome to the couple of old razors he had up there. To my surprise I found two old gillettes. What year model is a bit beyond my knowledge if fact I'm not even sure there in the right box's etc but I do look forward to giving them a shave in the near future once I have my technique down.

Very nice! You will never own better razors, especially if they were once used by your Father. Welcome to the forum!

very nice, plus there's nothing better than razors that stay in the family.

First one appears to be an English Flat Bottom New, the second one appears to be an English Long Comb New. I would guess from the early '30s. I believe the News first appeared around 1929 and were produced throughout the '30s. The US made ones started putting patent numbers under the guard around 1933, which is why I'm guessing yours is early 30s, but I'm not familiar enough with English models to verify if they would have incorporated the US patent numbers on the guard.

EDIT: Actually, looking at Mr-Razor http://www.mr-razor.com/Rasierer/The NEW/1930-40 NEW in brown bakelite case England.JPG
it appears the flat bottom, at least, could have been made in the late '30s to early '40s. Sorry. As I say I'm not really up on my English models.

I believe the flat bottom, along with the Raised Flat Bottom (RFB), models are fairly rare.

Anyone knowledgeable on the English New models can correct and add. I'm not familiar with English modes and the handles and sets they came with. But maybe this will give you enough info to get you started in the mean time.

In any case, the New Long Combs are one of my favorite razors, and from all I've read the English versions are coveted. Because of their age I wonder if they were your grandfather's?

From what I was told the brass version was issued as part of the kit when he joined the army reserves. As for the blue gillette I think it was something he just acquired over the years there was a couple of rolls razors an auto strop and a straight razor in the collection as well.

This came in today.

Was looking for a nice mild daily shaver, decided to get the Razorock Game changer .68

I have and like the .84, but after 4 days of shaving daily, the skin felt a little raw.

Haven't shaved with this yet but I'm looking forward to it. The superknurl handle is very grippy. The razor loaded with a blade comes in at 100g even.

The razor looks amazing & what a good looking case.

Indeed, the case was a great little bonus, even better than the pouches that Razorock occasionally gives with their razors. It's also supposedly a really aggressive razor, which normally suits me fine. Guess I'll find out tomorrow morning when I give it a go

I got a nice little Gibbs REF No°12 razor well just the head it's in decent condition, the baseplate is aluminium and the top cap is Zamak with a nice nickel finish, it covers the blade ends completely, amazing to see in a vintage razor I was surprised, well thought out designs from Gibbs even for their inexpensive razors, I seen many Gibbs models online all different sets with different REF numbers, they made some beautiful and unique razors. I've nicknamed this little razor the Gibbs Tech :biggrin1: as it was one of Gibb's cheapest & simplest offerings similar to how the Tech was for Gillette. I found the picture online of the original handle it looks like it came with that plastic handle.

I will pair the head up with one of my aluminium handles for now.

I have been looking for a vintage Old Spice mug excepting that the cost of shipping to be exorbitant, but I happened across a local buy and sell listing one for $10 which I thought was a fair deal. On the side it has pictures of 2 ships and says Ship Grand Turk Salem ~ 1786 on the side
and SHULTON on the bottom.

Unexpectedly there was something that was included in the purchase, a razor which has an open comb and a flat bottom but I could not not find many details. It says on the top part of the basplate:
TRIS LICENCIA ITALIANO, BREVETTO No.294306

I have no idea how this will shave as I only use Gillette Techs. Any additional information would be appreciated.

It's a Tris, Roth&Büchners brand used in Italy, basically a "rfb" Rotbart. It shaves like an Old type, but looks more fancy.

That's a pretty base plate, resembling the Ikon tech.

I LOVE that Tris :001_wub: - and if the Rotbart is anything to go by you are in for a treat!

Finally the lot that I won for EUR 46.00 and then was shipped to Australia instead of Austria arrived today. Highlights are the Schick B2 Repeater and a fully functional Fatboy in good condition (red indication marker and nearly all numbers black) gap looks even and everything clicks and moves :c9:
