What's new

Safety Razor Acquisition Thread.

Likely, but not sure at all. The "plain" case has a missaligned comb (one corner tooth is thick, the other thin), this, if it's a thick cap, is most likely matching, the blade case could also match, so only a no patent ball end handle is missing.

The other case should most likely contain a silver plated, serial numbered head with a patented ball end handle. There is a slight chance that some ABC handles landed in such late Gillette cases, as there are a few examples, but it's hard to say wether these are factory or user missmatches. Some close ups from the heads could have further clues.

Hello, thanks.
The thin cap head is from 1918, it should have a patented silver ball end handle and a smooth blade case.
I suspect your case doesn't have the patents on its bottom, meaning it's made by Gillette.

The thick cap is most likely from the end of the 20ies, should have a no patent silver or nickel ball end handle, the blade case could be matching.
The scroll handle is, imho, a bonus.

Nice.

Stepping out of my British razor comfort zone. Appears to be in great condition, case, blade banks, manual all there (seller pics). Très bien :)

That is a spectacular looking razor. I've seen just a few pictures of them and they are very interesting. When you get it could you show us how the adjustments works?
From the pictures I've seen it almost looks like the guard bars pivot on that screw that holds them on, and would swing up and down for the adjustment.

Thank you. I bid on it for the scroll handle and considered everything else a bonus.
I'd like to find a comb like the one in this picture.

And you are correct about the lack of patent data on the bottom of the cases.

I got my two Matador Razors today.
Not in mint condition to be honest and after a quick clean up with a mild detergent and a toothbrush I saw that one of the baseplates was in a bad condition.
I don't know if it can be replated and where I could let it be replated.

I loaded them with a couple of Ming Shi blades I have no use of.

One of them have quite a blade exposure and I'm a bit curious about how it will shave.

Anyway, here are some pics:

Congratulations Peter, the Le Supreme razor is really SUPREME!!!

That is gorgeous! Congrats, and enjoy it!

Peter, you always find those amazing razors, well done sir!

That is a STUNNER, Peter!!!!

Andrew, Todd, Mike, GAW, Dan - thanks so much! - I can’t wait to get it in hand and clean it up. Could seem like it is in mighty fine shape indeed!

I have already gotten feedback elsewhere that this may be one of the best condition specimens offered in a long while. That was also my own hunch which is why I jumped at it. When I receive it in hand I will share detail photos as not a lot exist online. This is a rare beast indeed :)

It is a special razor also because apparently the two sides have varying aggression/gap.

I found this Youtube video showing how the adjustment works.

It looks nice in the case, but the YouTube video really gives you an idea of how cool this razor truly is. I can't wait to hear your impression when you receive.

Thank you. So the baseplate moves up then both it and the top cap move up together from what I'm seeing.
And holy cow that brings a whole new meaning to the phrase wide open.
Very interesting about the varying blink app congratulations, indeed that does look like a fantastic razor.

So now it is a crappy, rainy day in Southern Ontario but the sun came out a little and I was out and about when Mrs. Somnos sent me a quick text. Hey I spotted a nice razor she said...here is a pic. Yes indeed Mrs. S! So she snapped it up and brought it home! Man, I love that Mrs. S!!! It virtually is new and appears that it may have been used maybe once. CLEAN!
