Rusty Old Razor - Worth it?

Hey all, this is my first post here ^_^. I just recently got into DE razors since I purchased an Edwin Jagger on sale from Soap.com. I'm planning on using Gilette shaving foams since I've got far too many of them lying around at home :/ Hopefully this'll all work out okay once I receive my EJ razor...

Anyway, my main question -- I did a little reading and some people LOVE gillette super speeds so I got a bit curious and found this at my local craigslist: $3G93M73J15Ge5O55H6d58813259e1bfc5149a.jpg $3E93Ff3Je5I35G65K6d5848a50712eb1d1458.jpg I was wondering if any of you guys could figure out if this would be easy to restore/worth it? I am a bit concerned since it looks rusted and in poor condition, but it's listed for $10...

Any feedback is appreciated!

Looks like a bar handled long-comb New to me with at least one bent tooth, but check out Mr. Razor's site (http://www.mr-razor.com/) for the particulars.

For $10, if the pictures are representative, it's a pretty good deal.

Yes, I think the price is reasonable, and the razors good. It is made from brass with gold plating, what you are seeing is not rust, but oxidation and soap scum.

Yup, long comb Gillette "NEW". Considered by many to be the best razor ever made. At $10, I would buy it, no doubt. I LOVE my "NEW". They're made of Brass or copper so it's not rusted, just dirty and tarnished. It would have been originally gold plated.

I took my old Gillette superspeed and put it in some boiling water with a little rubbing alcohol. let it boil for about 10 mins and most of the old soap scum melted right off. Used an old toothbrush and hand soap to get the little hard to hit places. Worked real well, just waiting to use some scrubbing bubbles and polish it up some. Looks like a nice razor though, open combs are a little aggressive for beginners though so be careful!

If you don't like the look of it, send it off to KronaKruiser for a replate. He had a similar razor replated in bright nickle for sale the other day that looked great.

As said, it is a Long Comb NEW, but DO NOT BOIL it!!! You can boil some water, take it off the heat to cool for a minute or so, then you can soak it for 5 min or so. After that, hit it with some scrubbing bubbles, let it sit about 1 minute, then go at it with an old toothbrush, and pipe cleaner to get between the teeth.

Then post pic's!

DO NOT BOIL IT!!

Thank you all for your responses. :) What're the issues that can arise from a crooked teeth?

Does this basically mean that it'll be nice and shiny once more? How long'll the plating last before it wears down again?

Yep! Razor 2 in his post, below, is the same razor that you picked up. Take a look at razor 4, the TV Special. I sold that to him after finding it in an antique store. I cleaned it up as best as I could, but it was in AWFUL shape cosmetically. His before pictures don't do it justice in terms of how bad it looked. Looking at the after pictures now, though, I was tempted to buy it back from him! As for how long the plating will last after it's redone, that depends on use and care. As long as a factory plating would last given the same variables. Sam (Krona Kruiser) has a very good reputation around here for his work.

ETA: Razor 4 is the one on the right in the second photo in his post.

Wow, Sam does a beautiful job. Would you happen to know how much he usually charges to replate a razor? I'm now seriously considering picking up this razor to get it worked on by Sam :D

..but if this razor is as great as you all say it is, what'll happen to my brand new Edwin Jagger D:

I'm not sure what his prices are, though I've heard reasonable. I sold him that TV Special for $7 and he's selling it replated for $22, so a $15 difference. That would lead me to guess that it's somewhere in the $20 - $30 neighborhood maybe? I've got a Fat Handle Tech coming that I may send off to him to have redone, so we'll see. The price for that and a Bar Handle New should be the same I would think.

Oh, and regarding your question on the crooked tooth, that shouldn't have any affect on the shave, it appears to be minor.

If you haven't bought it yet, I say grab it while you can. A lot of people go by the rule that if its functioning, it's worth at least $10. And if you end up not liking it, you can easily pass it along on the BST for what you paid once you accumulate enough posts and time.

Heck, I'd even take it off your hands!

The bend looks to be minor, so much so that I had a hard time spotting it at first. Funny, the Bar Handle NEW that Sam had for sale in his recent thread had one exactly like it, if not slightly more bent.
