Rust?

I've recently gotten into DE shaving and acquired a 40s SS from an antique store. I cleaned it up and while not collector quality, it certainly is shave-grade. I've used it a few times with a Derby blade, but about 4 days after I've put the blade in, I'm starting to see what appears to be rust on the blade and it has transferred itself to the razor. Is this normal for blades to do this? Given that it is stainless steel, I would guess not. Why is it doing this? Thanks.

This may be a complete and utter shot in the dark, but I'm thinking there could be some rust inside the barrel of the razor that is coming up when you open and close the doors after rinsing it, and it's getting onto the blade. You might want to spray some CLR into the hole at the top while the doors are open and run it under water to try to get whatever rust is in there out.

As part of my post-shave routine, I not only rinse and dry the razor and blade, but after drying, I dip the razor (with blade re-installed) into a wide-mouth jar of isopropyl alcohol and swish it around for a couple seconds.

The alcohol acts as a desiccant to remove any remaining water from the razor and blade.

Forgot about this......There is a 40's style SS made in the early 50's with a black plastic TTO knob, of this model there was a small number that were made with a chrome covered steel handle and head base plate (the part the blade sits on).

Does your razor have a black TTO knob?

I don't believe that the water is hard, as lathering isn't a problem and there isn't scale buildup on the shower door. I will try the alcohol thing in the future. I just wasn't sure as to what the proper post-shave razor care protocol was.

I always remove my blade after every shave. The main reason is I change razors to one of about 15 in my rotation and re-use the blade until it's dull, about 5 or 6 shaves. I also clean my razor after each use and would do so if I only had one.
