Running for Public Office

Just curious to see if anyone here is an elected official/politician.

I am thinking of pursing this avenue at some point in my life and would just like to find some people with which I could explore the topic. People who could offer guidance and advice.

not sure if I can really be of any help to you but my wife has worked in politics since '06. I guess the only thing I can tell you is money and consistency do matter. also, having a clear message to carry your campaign helps. i've seen way too many politicians whose lines seem too scripted - speak from your heart, not like an automaton. most importantly, be positive. voters don't want to hear negativity in campaigns -- the moment you start with the mudslinging is the moment you'll turn potential supporters away. save it for the debates.

Thanks, I appreciate the insights.

Politics have always fascinated me - in a good way. I'm at the point in my life now where I'll be done with school in a few short months and I'll have the ability to seriously consider a few offices. As a result I'm trying to decide if I really want to devote my life to this any time soon.

I was a poli sci major in college. I think it would all be based on what office you want to get into. If it's more than a counsel member I would suggest a consultant of some sort to get demographic information, consult on what to go over with from your past, just to name few. Also, a CFA or someone with finance expertise.

Best bet is to network through social media right now and get to know who will support you and where your allegiance lie.

Good luck.

Are you involved in local politics, civic organizations, school boards, committees, that sort of thing? That is always the best place to start. All politics is local. (Tip O'Neill said that)

With all due respect, go and accomplish something for yourself first, and then, if you have satisfied all your worldly needs, take a run at politics. The last thing we need in this country is another person that wants to be a career politician.

I haven't been an elected official, but I spent a session as chief of staff to a state senator. It had its good points - I enjoyed having a secretary and interns. Not to mention a pass that let me go anywhere I wanted in the capitol including the floor of the Senate! I got to write a few speeches, work on legislation, meet with constituents, and much else. Very enjoyable!

On the other hand, pay was lousy and there were long hours. Also, do not underestimate how seductive lobbyists are. I was targeted repeatedly... and it was somewhat successful. It's hard to resist very friendly people showing up to chat, taking you out for food and drinks, and so on. You really do form friendships with them. It's difficult not to. While I worked there, I don't think I spent a dime on food or drink - there was always someone around to take you out for food, several nice receptions every night, and so on.

I'd be lying if I said that I didn't enjoy it. It is a nice lifestyle, with lots of goodies and intelligent people and some rather fetching women swinging by with a smile to take you to lunch. How can you say no?

Though I enjoyed it, I chose to go back to the private sector. It pays better and I have a clearer conscience about what I'm doing. People pay me to work and I work. Fair exchange. It's not a bunch of gifts trying to curry favor. Honestly, I don't know how many people could resist those kinds of charms. I couldn't. I didn't see anyone else who could, either.

Do what you think is right, but don't think you're going to go in there and change things or be different from the rest. You'll be seduced just like everyone else who gets into the system.

Always remember that government is of the people, by the people and for the people. When you stop doing what the people you represent want, you stop being a leader and take on the mantle of ruler. It is their will and not your's that matter. Represent is a good word. You represent those who voted for and those who voted against you.
