Day 1 of my journal. Hello Badger & Blade friends!
I’m discovering that I like razors which run the gamut of efficiency. I’ll admit it, I’m a BBS-chaser, but after a few days of aggressive shaving I find my face needs a break and I’m happy to use a milder razor.
Although I haven’t tried it, one razor which keeps popping up on the forums is the Muhle R41, which seems to be both a fan-favorite and has cult status as one of the most aggressive razors in either the mass or artisan markets. For some reason, the R41 didn’t tempt me. However, I happen to love the look of Timeless razors, and when I read that the Brass 0.78mm OC was at least as aggressive as the R41 my curiosity was peaked and a sale on Father’s Day sealed the deal.
The 78 OC is a beauty. Weighty, sculpted, warm-toned and lustrous. But….it tore my face to shreds. After two shaves I realized it was probably going to sit on my counter and go unused. Either that or I would sell it. So, to give it a new lease on life I decided to pick up the brass 0.38mm SB plate, which I suspected would be very mild, but at least would be good for down days when my face needed a rest, a task now reserved for my Overlander.
The 38 SB plate even looks mild. The safety bars are chunky, blocky, perfectly smooth and very wide, giving you the impression that not much will make it over them to the blade. Well, that’s where the magic comes in, because the 38 SB is surprisingly efficient. Once again, despite the narrow blade gap and 0.05mm blade exposure, the stats alone don’t tell the whole story. Granted, I tuned-up the efficiency with a Perma-Sharp, but I was still shocked when it delivered a very nice DFS+, and with no irritation.
For now, other razors which continue to drift across my mind’s eye are the Velocity One, the Muhle R94, and the Greencult 2.0. I’m doing my best to hold my RAD in check. I’m heading with my family to Poland at the end of July. We have a small place there. My wife has promised to buy me a Stando of my choice to keep there so I can use it when we go on vacation. I chose the Mara, which is on the mild end of the spectrum with a blade gap of just 0.70mm. My secret plan is to buy another more aggressive razor after we arrive (shhhhh....mum's the word).
