Ruminations on the Edge

Day 1 of my journal. Hello Badger & Blade friends!

I’m discovering that I like razors which run the gamut of efficiency. I’ll admit it, I’m a BBS-chaser, but after a few days of aggressive shaving I find my face needs a break and I’m happy to use a milder razor.

Although I haven’t tried it, one razor which keeps popping up on the forums is the Muhle R41, which seems to be both a fan-favorite and has cult status as one of the most aggressive razors in either the mass or artisan markets. For some reason, the R41 didn’t tempt me. However, I happen to love the look of Timeless razors, and when I read that the Brass 0.78mm OC was at least as aggressive as the R41 my curiosity was peaked and a sale on Father’s Day sealed the deal.

The 78 OC is a beauty. Weighty, sculpted, warm-toned and lustrous. But….it tore my face to shreds. After two shaves I realized it was probably going to sit on my counter and go unused. Either that or I would sell it. So, to give it a new lease on life I decided to pick up the brass 0.38mm SB plate, which I suspected would be very mild, but at least would be good for down days when my face needed a rest, a task now reserved for my Overlander.

The 38 SB plate even looks mild. The safety bars are chunky, blocky, perfectly smooth and very wide, giving you the impression that not much will make it over them to the blade. Well, that’s where the magic comes in, because the 38 SB is surprisingly efficient. Once again, despite the narrow blade gap and 0.05mm blade exposure, the stats alone don’t tell the whole story. Granted, I tuned-up the efficiency with a Perma-Sharp, but I was still shocked when it delivered a very nice DFS+, and with no irritation.

For now, other razors which continue to drift across my mind’s eye are the Velocity One, the Muhle R94, and the Greencult 2.0. I’m doing my best to hold my RAD in check. I’m heading with my family to Poland at the end of July. We have a small place there. My wife has promised to buy me a Stando of my choice to keep there so I can use it when we go on vacation. I chose the Mara, which is on the mild end of the spectrum with a blade gap of just 0.70mm. My secret plan is to buy another more aggressive razor after we arrive (shhhhh....mum's the word).

Like you I like very effective razors with the Timeless and Lambda being favourites. But the Rocca is just phenomenal and the Greencult not far behind. Based on stats my Rocca is only beaten by the Athena (not counting vintage) and sits above my Blackbird as well. It is really really good - ans when you factor in the price point it might even be ridiculously good. The R41 is just an easy catch when you are purchasing other shave gear. The head will do. Amazing razor and toned down from the Beast it was in 2011/2013 (from what I understood) still plenty effective for a marble BBS.

The Velocity One on the other hand in my mind is hyped. It looks stunning don’t get me wrong, but if it’s worth the price comparative to the shave is purely in the eye of the beholder.

Enjoy your holiday!!

@Guido75 to be frank, I’ve been following your journal and it was your posts and praise which sparked my interest in the R94. My bias was to overlook most mass market razors, but I realized if it’s among your top razors there must be something I’m overlooking. My only question is do I buy it now or wait until I get to Poland so I can have it with me on vacation. I guess I could always just take it with me 🤪

Well I checked and the place you mentioned doesn’t seem to have them in stock at the moment. That woild make you safe!

However…I have seen one on German eBay - not too far for shipping I would say :wink2:

@Guido75 do you happen to know the diameter of the handle? I’d like to buy an inkwell stand for it.
I have the rose gold handle which measures 13mm where you hold the handle, but there are two rims on top and at the butt end that measure 14mm (according to my not so accurate plastic capiler) - so I would go for more towards 14mm. Or get the Razorock adjustable one.

The Goodfellas one is too wide at least.

@Guido75 so are you using the handle from the R89-RG with the R94 head?

ROTE 7/6/24

I have some friends coming over for dinner with their kids and wanted to grab my best shave…..so I reached for my TiBird. That kind of says it all. I absolutely love every razor in my collection, but when I want the best shave I can get, I’ll admit it, I go for the Blackbird.

While shaving this afternoon it dawned on me that none of my other razors have as sharp a feel against my face. This must be due to the very thin and angular safety bars which are sharp in their own right. I remember once my 10 year old son was pretending to shave next to me, and even without a blade the TiBird left a red mark on his face. Now he won’t touch it. This begs the question, do the sharp angles of the TiBird merely create the sensation of sharpness, or do they really aid in efficiency. Hard to know, but none of my other razors feel that way and none of them shave that close. Which leaves the answer as a solid….possibly! And I get it, no stats tell the whole story of a razor. It’s about the holistic design.

I’m also noticing that over time the residual irritation after shaving is lessening. Is my face acclimating or my technique improving? Maybe both. But this creates a quandary. I’ve always rated the TiBird highest for efficiency, but low on comfort, leaving room for other razors like the Athena, Ti95, etc. to possibly offer a better cost/benefit proposition. Regardless, I enjoy many other razors for their aesthetic beauty, innovative designs, and the unique experience they provide. I don’t want to end up like one of the Blackbird Brothers saying something like “I eventually sold off all my other razors and now just use the TiBird”. It’s funny what we worry about. But I know myself. I’m not the kind who will turn away from something when it’s the truth.

Anyway, for now, I still love them all. In fact....I want more :001_302:

ROTE 7-8-2024

One of the first soaps I picked up was B&M Seville, which many consider to be a classic Barbershop scent. I found it a bit old fashioned and soapy and wasn’t crazy about it. Unwittingly, I picked up a few more Barbershop scents by buying soaps without smelling them first including A&E Signature, Shave Dads Yellow Submarine (collab with HC&C) and finally PAA Gondolier. Of the four, the only one I like is Gondolier because it smells less “detergenty” and more like cologne. It also had a touch of menthol, which I surprisingly liked. Just from looking at B&B, DFS and various Facebook groups it’s clear Proraso Green has a massive following, which didn’t really interest me as I wanted to stick with natural ingredients mainly found in artisan soaps. But after trying and enjoying Gondolier, I gave in and decided to give Proraso a try (I mean, Italy has loved it since 1948 so why shouldn’t I?).

Frankly, of all the Barbershops I own I like Proraso Green the best. It’s clean and fresh, not soapy at all, with a classic aftershave scent. The menthol feel and smell is obviously very strong but not unpleasant. One negative is that the cooling sensation is so strong that it masks some of the blade feel as you’re shaving making it tricky to sense how effectively you’re cutting. I found I had to use my fingers much more than normal to get tactile feedback, and even still I’m pretty sure it lowered the effectiveness of my shave. I loaded my Ti95 with a Nacet, which has a tricky blade angle to begin with, and after considerable buffing I only managed to achieve a DFS+/BBS-. The Proraso splash also dried a bit sticky. I’m sure I’ll use it again, because it’s fun and smells nice, but I’m a little suspicious that it will lower the closeness of my shaves.

In other news, after careful deliberation which was aided in no small part by the B&B community, particularly @Mr. Shavington and @Stikeyoda, I decided I would hold off on the Tedalus V1, which is another discussion in itself. Of course, my RAD was quickly sublimated into other razors which I purchased in short order including a Matte Finish Muhle Rocca R94, which arrived today, and a pre-owned Wolfman SS WR2 1.15 SB with 100mm WRH2 handle which the kind seller will drop in the mail tomorrow.

Normally, I’m not that interested in mass market razors but I simply couldn’t ignore the accolades of the R94 sung by @Guido75. As to the Wolfman, I’ve been on the waiting list for 2 months and really have no idea what to order so I figured it might be best to try an inexpensive 2nd hand one first. I figure the 1.15 will give me a central benchmark to know if I should go narrower or wider with my order. I picked up the 1.15 for $300 including shipping (no stand) which seemed like a pretty good deal as it looks to be in good shape.

Lastly, I got hit by the drop from Wald Shaving and couldn’t resist and placed an order for an A1. Again, I blame @Mr. Shavington (not really, I blame myself). Now the question is what to order? I’m pretty sure I like the Nimbus handle and am leaning towards the Gengar/Haunter mix with white bottom. The question I’m suffering with is which knot to order, bulb, hybrid or fan? So far, all my knots are bulbs and I use a bowl to make my lather. It seems fans are more the purview of face latherers, but the fan knot in my eyes goes better with the Nimbus handle. I’ve never owned a hybrid. Maybe that would be a good middle ground? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

+1 - I really like mine and I like others either equally well or better. It is definitely not the end all and be all of all razors for me.
Anyway, for now, I still love them all. In fact....I want more
+1 again! :lol1: I like my rotation very much and have placed myself in restraint for a very specific reason! Still looking at razors daily though. Just too much fun!

By the way - good decision on the Velocity One if you ask me. Well, you didn't, but just my 2 cents.

Guido.
