Rude eBay Seller Response Or Am I Too Sensitive?

There is a box I was interested in buying on eBay that the seller was saying was made of Bakelite. My interest in the box hinged entirely on it being made from Bakelite, so I asked the seller if he tested it and was sure that it was Bakelite. Here's the dialogue:

ME: "Have you performed a Bakelite test and are sure that it is indeed Bakelite? Thanks."

SELLER: "Well, I did what I call the "rub and smell" test....I don't know any other. Also, everyone else who has listed these boxes has called it "Bakelite" and there haven't been any reprecussions. If you look at my feedback you will see that I don't practice deceit, and if for ANY reason a buyer doesn't like, want, or feels that an item was misrepresentd by me in any way, I always take items back AND will pay the return shipping as well. In my item description I say 100% guaranteed, and you can take that to the bank. Thank you for your inquiry and good luck"

I was a little put off by his response to so simple a question and told him I was no longer interested in the box. A lot of people list items as Bakelite when they aren't, and that was why I asked.

Was that too much or am I too sensitive?

I don't think its rude, its just worded very strangely. I wouldn't worry about it, he has a great return policy and offered for you to check his references (feedback). I'd say its pretty safe, even if he may have came off as a little stand-off ish. If he guarantees it, hold him to it.

not at all he was very honest with you instating that he tested to the best of his knowledge and of what he knows about the item. If there was any issues they would take a return and pay shipping id say you are safe with this person.

I think it is just a re-affirmation that he will stand by what he says and will do what is needed to make a customer happy.

Okay. Too sensitive it is. But all he had to say was that the box tested positive for Bakelite and there was no need for further elaboration. He came off like my question attacked his integrity as a seller.

All I can say is, if the roles were reversed, I wouldn't respond to a potential buyer like that.

Your response might have come off as an attack. I know you did not mean it that way, but you cannot always read that through a computer screen. The seller could have responded more professionally, though.

My first impression was that the seller was embarrassed about not knowing the answer to your question.

It's all in good fun, and if your internet buddies can't be bluntly frank, or frankly blunt, who can?

No, not rude. The tone of email is not rude at all as he is simply stressing that if you are not happy he will take it back at no expense. He is stressing the fact which you may interpret as being rude, but the intent of this email is strictly one of trying to assuage any fears of purchasing from him. Good luck!
