What's new

RTancilo Silvia - the new era begins... next week :)

I have been using a 1980's vintage Gaggia Espresso for about 6 years now, and have resisted buying a new one...the boiler has been slowly dying - and I can't get it to warm up past 215 on a steam cycle (according to the PID I have installed).

So.... I ordered a new V3 Silvia. It should be here next week.

I ordered a bottomless portaflter and back flush disc today, and hopefully it will all arrive at the same time for next week to be a new era in home espresso for us.

The first task will be to install the PID (Auber) and try to figure out the idiosyncracies of the machine.

I'd love an E61 or HX machine, but the prices jump (here in Canada) from $750 for the Silvia to $1400 and up for an E61 (Anita / La Scala / Giotto). It was tough sell on the Silvia, and I KNOW I would never have been able to convince my wife to let me buy the Giotto.

Congratulations! I'm excited for you - Miss Silvia, a PID, and a bottomless PF sounds like a nice setup.

Have you considered roasting your own beans? I got a FreshRoast about a year ago and have never looked back - the jump in shot quality was incredible.

Enjoy!

I have been home-roasting for about 5 years now - I quickly realized after I bought the Gaggia off ebay that $16 a pound for black cat was not sustainable.

I just roasted a batch of espresso based on the 2008 WBC championship blend: 420 g of brazil 110g of yemen mattari and 110 g of sumatra

I am finishing the batch I did of this blend about 4 days ago, and its super-good.

I use a split-wired poppery I and a stir-crazy / convection oven. I am working on a drum roaster for the BBQ - hopefully by the end of spring I will have that done.

What machine do you use?

Silvia is capable of making some wicked shots, but she has many idiosyncracies. Good luck! I also have a PID in the mail; many years of temp surfing with Silvia have worn me out.

I got Rancilio Sylvia and Rocky from espressotec.com in BC 5 years ago when I moved into a new house. I keep thinking that it was the best $1000 I spent in a long time. You will love it. (By the way I think espressotec has the best tasting espresso roast in Canada). Congratulations!

I bought mine from Espressotec, too.

My portafilter arrived today - with the backflush disc. Looks good.... My gaggia is nearing its end - no steam temp at all this morning. The Silvia will arrive just in time.... if its not delayed anywhere along the way.
